The inquest into the death of inmate Thomas Morris at Woodhill jail has also heard from the acting governor of the prison.

Nicola Marfleet said management failures were not to blame for his death.

The 31-year-old was the 18th inmate to take his own life at the jail over the course of four years.

Ms Marfleet accepted that recommendations from previous inquests were only now being implemented.

She referred to the pressures at Woodhill, a high security jail, saying it was understaffed.

Ms Marfleet said there was a constant "trickle of resignations" and that half the staff were either "on probation or just off probation".

She said they had saved many other lives of prisoners who were at risk of self-harming.

The acting governor explained that making Woodhill safer was the "number one priority".

Ms Marfleet added: "I am at a loss of words to say how we felt when Thomas passed away."

    The inquest continues.

  6. Woodhill inquest: Inmate acted 'out of character' before deathpublished at 16:40 British Summer Time 4 July 2017

    Nicola Haseler
    BBC Three Counties

An inquest into the death of an inmate at Woodhill Prison in Milton Keynes has heard how he acted "out of character" when he threw his TV, narrowly missing another prisoner.

Thomas Morris was found hanged in his cell last June.

A drugs recovery worker, Eunace Abuzeki, told the inquest that 31-year-old Thomas Morris had "never presented as violent".

But Ms Abuzeki said she told the governor that if Thomas was moved off the prison wing it would increase the risk of him harming himself.

She also explained the mental health team needed to assess him before he was moved.

Ms Abuzeki told the inquest, sitting at Christ the Cornerstone church in Milton Keynes, that she only found out the next day that he had been moved into a single cell.
