Plans to re-build the Intu shopping centre in Milton Keynes have been approved by the secretary of state, external.

There's been a row over how much the centre at Midsummer Place should be re-developed.

The centre's owners want to build new shops on two levels instead of one and include a new cinema and dining area.

But objectors say the redevelopment, approved by Milton Keynes Council in 2015, goes against the wishes of residents who voted in a referendum to approve the Neighbourhood Plan, which sets out how public space should be used.

Milton Keynes Council, which has spent £150,000 defending the decision, says there's no winners in the long-running battle, external, but hopes it can start to work together on plans to revitalise the city centre.

  9. Bedford jail set for more prisonerspublished at 12:21 British Summer Time 19 July 2017

    Danny Shaw
    BBC Home Affairs Correspondent

The Ministry of Justice says it's making an extra 364 prison places available in the coming weeks to cope with possible extra pressures over the summer.

Cells at Bedford, High Down and Haverigg jails are among those being prepared for use.

The Ministry stresses it's an "operational" decision.

    HMP Bedford

Justice Minister Dominic Raab said: "We monitor very carefully the input into prisons from the wider criminal justice system.

"Obviously we can't control that, you can't control crime, the sentencing is done independently by judges.

"What we want to make sure is that we've got the leeway to be able to deal with that.

"But the problem with prisons, of course, is a bit like the NHS. You've got no control about the overall volume coming in, unless you can cut the re-offending and break the vicious cycle of crime."

  14. More than 26,000 lightning strikes in East of Englandpublished at 11:27 British Summer Time 19 July 2017

    Radar image of lightning strikes

There were more than 26,000 lightning strikes over the East of England last night, with some properties damaged by the storms.

The conditions also caused power cuts and disruption to rail services because of damage to overhead lines.

But why was there so much lightning?

"Thunderstorms are made when the air goes up quickly, and very warm air at the surface with cold air above it allowed the warm air to rise violently over a large area, creating these huge storms," said Jake Cope from the BBC Weather Centre.

"They were so long-lived because many of the thunderstorms started 'back-building'.

"This is where the wind pushing the system along bumps into air flowing out of the rear of the storm and is again forced upwards, sustaining the rear edge of the cloud."

She was "conscious and breathing", but declined hospital treatment, he added. We have yet to receive any further information about her condition.

I've been getting more information about the lightning strike that hit a house on Dudley Street in Bedford last night.

Karen Knights, who lives close by, looked after the 93-year-old woman who's home caught fire after lightning hit her TV aerial.

She said a man who lived behind on George Street saw the strike and knocked on our door.

Ms Knights said: "Thankfully the fire brigade got here very quickly and brought our elderly neighbour out and into our lounge.

"She's been taken to hospital to be checked over but her back room has had a lot of damage."

She says the woman was "OK" and "still in hospital", but it was "lovely to see people coming out to help".

A Bedford community came to the aid of a local resident last night after her home was struck by lightning.

Belinda Lane, who lives in the area and took the photos below, said: "Thanks to the neighbours in the next street seeing it strike and running round to Dudley. Firemen broke the door down and all sorted."
