  14. 'No asbestos' at demolition site near schoolspublished at 15:31 British Summer Time 17 July 2017

    Stuart Bailey
    BBC News

We reported earlier that two Bedfordshire schools were closed today because of safety concerns over nearby demolition work.

Central Bedfordshire Council said the developer broke planning rules by not notifying it of its intention to knock down an old building near Robert Bloomfield Academy and Shefford Lower School.

The BBC has contacted Black Horse Residential, which is based in Ampthill, but the developer has yet to comment.

The schools had posted a message on their websites, external saying there were fears of "a potential asbestos risk" at the partly-demolished site, but the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has since confirmed there were no such problems.

A HSE spokesman said: "Inspectors made enquiries and have established that the contractor followed the correct procedures relating to the handling of asbestos.

"Any materials that contained asbestos had been removed before the demolition work started.

"We have informed the local authority of this and there is no requirement for further HSE involvement in this matter."

It is not yet known when the two schools will be reopened.

Two schools in Bedfordshire are closed today because of safety concerns over nearby demolition work.

Shefford Lower School and Robert Bloomfield Academy were advised to keep their combined 1,400 pupils away until inspections can be carried out at the old Lower School site, which is being knocked down.

In notices on their websites, the principals said there were concerns about the safety of a partially-demolished boiler room and a potential asbestos risk.
