    More than 100 NHS staff and health workers in the UK have now died with coronavirus, it has been confirmed.

    As the nation fell silent at 11:00 to remember those who have passed away, here we remember and pay tribute to 14 from the East of England whose deaths have been reported to the media.

    Over 400 people have signed up to volunteer with Luton Borough Council.

    The council's chief executive said the number was "quite remarkable".

    "These volunteers are out, amongst other things, helping to deliver hot meals and food parcels, and collecting prescriptions," said Robin Porter.

    "A massive, massive thank you to everyone, not least the whole council workforce, which I know has been working tirelessly since this emergency began."

    The council’s has been "working round the clock" to secure personal protective equipment equipment to meet "shortfall", the council said.

    Members of the passenger transport unit have delivered about 15,000 items, including hand gel, visors, waste bags, 4,250 face masks, 6,600 pairs of gloves and nearly 4,000 aprons, the council said.

    More than 100 safety glasses, 60 splash-proof googles, 10 boxes of protective gloves and disposable aprons have been donated by a school's science department to a care home.

    St Francis' College in Letchworth Garden City, gave the equipment to Foxholes Care Home in Hitchin, Hertfordshire.

    Neil Gandecha, estate manager for the home, said it was a "prime example" of community spirit.

    The items would "protect care home staff, who are playing a vital part in the fight against the coronavirus", he added.

  6. Hospital workers to get 2,000 sportswear items from boxing champpublished at 17:08 British Summer Time 28 April 2020

    The world heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua has said staff at Watford General Hospital will be receiving a donation of 2,000 items from his sportswear sponsor to say "thank you" for their work.

    The 30-year-old, who holds the WBA, IBF, WBO, and IBO belts, was born in the hospital and said in his Instagram post that "Watford will forever run through my veins".

    Last week we brought you a story about Louis Bunker, a 12-year-old who was planning on riding his bike 50km in his back garden to raise £100 for the Bedford Hospitals Charity. , external

    On Saturday, Louis, from Felmerham in Bedfordshire, did it in 1hr 41mins.

    He said it left him "very tired", but "very proud", as so far he has raised more than £1,400 for the charity.

    The police officers' professional representative body has said suspects coughing and spitting at bobbies during the coronavirus pandemic was "awful and abhorrent".

    It estimated that 10 Norfolk police officers have been spat at or coughed at by people claiming to be carrying coronavirus since the outbreak began.

    Andy Symonds, chairman of the Police Federation's Norfolk Police branch, said: "It is awful, abhorrent and another stressor on police officers’ work.

    "They are sadly working in an era where they know it’s not if, it’s when will they be assaulted.

    "And now they face this extra pressure and strain."

    He also said nurses and doctors were also "being coughed and spat at" and said the Federation wanted offenders handed a prison sentence rather than any kind of community order.

    A new coronavirus rapid testing method, which only takes four hours, has started at Northampton General Hospital., external

    Swabs can now be tested in the hospital's laboratory, instead of being sent to external sites, which on average took 48 hours.

    Dr Davis Thomas, divisional director, said: "With a quicker diagnosis, we know which wards our patients need to go to so we can provide the best care for them in the right place."

    The hospital said is can test over 100 patients per day and will gradually increase capacity over the coming weeks and months.

    A small Ipswich music venue has started an online fundraising plea to help keep it afloat.

    The Smokehouse, external on South Street is one of hundreds of venues forced to close last month because of the social distancing measures announced in light of the coronavirus pandemic.

    With social distancing expected to remain for the coming weeks and months, even once lockdown measures are eased, the future for music venues remains unclear.

    Joe Bailey, who runs the venue, said: "These are difficult times across the whole industry, for venues, artists and promoters.

    "There are venues across the world facing the same challenges as we are - an uncertain future after building such a strong reputation."

    So far, more than £3,600 has been pledged by supporters towards a target of £12,000.

    Hundreds of health students and staff from the University of Northampton have signed up to help the NHS deal with the coronavirus pandemic.

    David Young, a lecturer in molecular bio-science who is studying for a PHD, is helping out in the pathology department at Northampton General Hospital.

    He said: "I would love to see more of our students having placements over here.

    "We do send some now, they go to extensive care and different areas of pathology, and that link getting stronger and stronger can only be a good thing for the university and the hospital."

    Additional mental heath support is being offered across Cambridgeshire to help anyone suffering from issues relating to the coronavirus pandemic.

    The Now We’re Talking, external campaign is aiming to combat loneliness and help anyone who might be struggling.

    Lifeline Plus is available on 0808 808 2121 on Monday-Friday between 09:00 and 14:00.

    The same phone number is shared with Lifeline, which is a service to provide support for those in mental health distress, which runs seven days a week between 14:00 and 23:00.

    Tracy Dowling, chief executive of Cambridgeshire and Peterborough NHS Foundation Trust, said: "In the current climate we’ve had to adapt our services and are already offering video consultations rather than face-to-face appointments where appropriate.

    "We have also increased the support in our crisis services to ensure people who need urgent help can access it quickly.”
