  2. Coronavirus deaths in East - latest risepublished at 18:24 British Summer Time 1 May 2020

    The latest figures for the number of Covid-19 deaths each day in NHS hospitals in the East of England have been released by the government, external.

    In the BBC East region, statistics for the NHS trusts show a rise of 44 deaths - one of the smallest daily rises seen for weeks.

    The total number of deaths at the region's hospitals is now 2,696.

  4. More drive-in testing centres to openpublished at 16:56 British Summer Time 1 May 2020

    Three drive-through testing sites are being set up in Hertfordshire.

    They will be open on Saturdays at County Hall in Hertford, on Sundays at Watford Leisure Centre (Central) and Mondays in Stevenage at Hertfordshire County Council’s office on Six Hills Way, all between 10:00 and 16:00.

    Jim McManus, director of public health for Hertfordshire, said: "There are a number of different testing routes, depending on where you live, what your job is, how old you are, whether you have symptoms and if you have access to your own transport."

    There are also tests being carried out every day at Stansted Airport in Essex as well as drive-though testing at Howard Court, Welwyn Garden City and at Harpenden Memorial Hospital, for NHS, social care and care home or nursing home staff.

    Key workers have come together to create a heartwarming and moving video to reassure families about how their loved ones are being treated in the intensive care unit at Watford General Hospital.

    West Herts Hospitals NHS Trust wanted people to know that getting "the very best care, for ever patient, every day remains our vision".

    The social media post said: "We will always be by your loved one's side, reassuring them, offering care, kindness" and looking after them "like they were a member of our own family".

    They are "not alone" and "we will hold their hand in your hand, thinking of your hand in theirs".

    Two councils in Suffolk are the latest to resume garden waste collections which were suspended because of the Covid-19 pandemic.

    Local authorities initially wanted to focus on protecting collections of general rubbish, clinical waste and recycling.

    The collections, which householders have to pay extra for, will restart on Monday, 11 May across theBabergh and Mid Suffolk, externaldistricts.

    Mid Norfolk MP George Freeman, external has posted on Twitter to remind people that three coronavirus testing centres have been established in the county.

    They are at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital, external, the Queen Elizabeth ll University Hospital, external in King's Lynn and the James Paget Hospital, external at Gorleston.

    Bedford Borough Council is looking for donations so they can be redistrubted to those that need them.

    A simple warning has been released by fire services in the East.

    Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service said that over the past few days it has attended several fires that all could have been avoided by people staying at home.

    It also warns us not to have a garden bonfire as the consequences can be devastating.

    In neighbouring Bedfordshire, the service is also reminding people not to light bonfires.

    It released a photograph of a recent garden fire that spread quickly and caused damage to a shed, nearby fences and land.

    The low cost airline Wizz Air is resuming some of its flights from Luton Airport.

    Flights are departing for Bulgaria, Hungary and Portugal.

    All passengers and crew will be required to wear face masks while on board.

    To help understand what impact the coronavirus shutdown is having on small breweries in the UK, a university wants companies to take part in research.

    Cambridgeshire and Essex-based Anglia Ruskin University wants to know how breweries and allied industries are coping.

    Tom Goodacre, from the faculty of business and law, said: "The virus has potential to have a catastrophic effect on small brewers, especially as we have seen the number of new breweries opening flatten out after a surge between 2012 and 2018.

    "Identifying what breweries can do to keep going in this context will help in the return to normal, once the restrictions are lifted, and we are able to return to pubs, bars and restaurants."

    A county town's main street market has reopened after closing six weeks ago due to the coronavirus lockdown, but only with three stalls.

    A fishmonger, bread stall and a general food stall are back in business on Ipswich Market, external, with two-metre social distancing rules applied.

    Fishmonger and market spokesman Mike Young said he was glad to be back, although it would only be on Fridays and Saturdays.

    "We will police people keeping to the rules and we have been quite busy so far with our regular Friday customers who had heard we were open on the radio and from other places," he said.

    "Some fishmongers had kept going (through the lockdown) and the supermarkets also had fish and were very good at policing the 2m distancing rules."

    Mr Young was not worried about supplies of fish, despite Billingsgate (the major fish wholesale market in London) being closed for three weeks and only partially open in the last two weeks.

    "One thing that is going to be huge is the home delivery business. We put something on social media yesterday [Thursday] at teatime and 11,300 people have seen it," he said.
