    A turning on of Christmas lights, that normally attracts 6,000 people, has already been cancelled.

    A switch-on event was due to take place on 27 November in Ely, Cambridgeshire.

    Ian Newstead, the event manager, said the city will still have lights, if they can be put up safely and following guidelines, but a special event will not be held.

    "We are going to do an alternative online switch-on event, for those those that can't get out," he said.

    "We will find a way."

  2. Cruise ship tribute for Colonel Tom during Clap for Carerspublished at 11:32 British Summer Time 1 May 2020

    A cruise ship crew paid tribute to newly-promoted fundraising veteran Colonel Tom Moore for his 100th birthday on Thursday night during the Clap for Carers event.

    The Spirit of Discovery is not at sea at present due to lockdown and is berthed at Tilbury in Essex, Saga, external said.

  3. Mental health nurse doing her 'best' during difficult timespublished at 11:05 British Summer Time 1 May 2020

    A NHS worker in Colchester has said she is under extra pressure because of the pandemic.

    Marnie Clark, 21, is a mental health nurse who visits patients in their homes.

    She has recorded an audio diary for BBC Essex, talking about life on the front line.

    "It's really hard go to someone's home wearing gloves, mask and apron, sit two metres away and ask them how they are doing," she said.

    "It's really hard but it's the best we can do at the moment."

    For the fifth week in a row, amazing blue lights have been projected onto well-known buildings in Cambridge.

    Several events companies, calling themselves the Shine Bright Team, external, have used their skills to honour NHS and key workers.

    They are The Crane Event, JMPS, Pink Lamp, Blueshed and JezO's.

    On Thursday evening for the Clap for Carers event, Gonville and Caius, Westminter College, and a sculpture outside the Department of Engineering, all turned blue.

    Justin Crane, from Crane Event, said it was approached by Sharon King-Livesey, to illuminate the "Construction in Aluminium" artwork.

    "Built by my Dad, Design Engineer Clive King in 1967, and a team at Cambridge University Engineering labs, Kenneth Martin’s sculpture design is synonymous with the innovation happening in Cambridge and beyond, in the fight to save lives," she said.

    The companies have promised more will be lit up next week.

    Yesterday, Captain Tom Moore was treated to a flypast over his Bedfordshire home.

    The World War Two veteran celebrated his 100th birthday after becoming a national treasure by raising over £30m for the NHS for his sponsored walk.

    Children putting their drawings of rainbows in their windows has become part of coronavirus lockdown culture.

    And on Thursday evening, just a clap for carers was taking place, real double rainbows were seen above the skies in the East.

    David Lowndes, a photographer for the Peterborough Telegraph, external, captured this amazing double rainbow above Peterborough Hospital (above).

    ‪In Mildenhall, Suffolk Police, external, said: "We're not the treasure at the end of the rainbow - that will be the time we can all hold our friends and family once again."

    Cambridgeshire County Council , externalhas turned to social media to recruit people to replace staff that have succumbed to the coronavirus which it said had left home care services under "intense strain".

    The latest figures for the number of Covid-19 deaths each day in NHS hospitals in the East of England have been released by the government, external.

    In the BBC East region, statistics for the NHS trusts show a rise of 64 deaths.

    The total number of deaths at the region's hospitals is now 2,652.
