WATCH: Burning car said to have started the Luton Airport car park fire

Footage has emerged of a burning car, which could have started the massive car park fire at Luton Airport.

The video was said to have been taken shortly after the fire began on the third floor of the car park, late on Tuesday evening.

The woman who filmed the car was there to pick up relatives.

“We saw there is a fire [but] the fire extinguisher from this floor was used so we went to another floor to take another. But at that moment when we came to the car it exploded and we couldn’t come near," she said.

    Colin Foster

A little while ago I spoke to a man whose car is trapped in the car park next to the partially collapsed multi-storey.

Colin Foster says he doesn’t yet know if it’s been damaged.

He was travelling to Luton last night after a holiday in Egypt and was diverted to Bristol with 45 minutes still left to go on the flight.

The 55-year-old and his wife spent £300 on a taxi home to Buckinghamshire, but then travelled to Luton this morning because they understood they would be allowed to collect their car.

Unfortunately, they haven’t been allowed to remove it.

He tells me there's "obviously a huge amount of miscommunication" that's happened in the wake of the fire.

“We’ve emailed the airport and have been told we’ll have to wait five more days to get a response."

Jareena Sarabatta and her husband Gian are due to fly to Turkey this afternoon to celebrate their 47th wedding anniversary.

They are travelling with her aunt and uncle but were waiting for information about when their flight would be.

"We’re just going with the flow", she said as they sat with a burger in the terminal.

Their airline says they should be able to fly later this evening but they’re not sure.

"We’ve heard nothing from our airline.

"It’s no-one’s fault what has happened but there should at least be someone to pick up the phone."

Despite being frustrated, Jareena is choosing to stay cheerful, saying: "We could have been in that car park when the fire began. At least we weren’t."

The family live an hour and a half away from the airport and will head home if their flight is cancelled.

Cristina Cristea's car is still stuck in the car park next to the one where the fire broke out, but she was relieved to find out it hasn't been damaged.

The 25-year-old, who works at a dry cleaners and a restaurant, had to pay to stay in a local hotel overnight and has missed a day of work.

An airport worker told her around lunchtime that no cars would be coming out of the car park for the next few hours.

She had been at her sister's wedding in Romania and landed back at Luton at around 20:00 BST, hearing sirens afterwards.

"At first we thought it was shotguns or something as we couldn't see any flames, then we saw what happened," she said. "Thank God our car isn't affected."

  16. Insurance should cover damaged cars, industry group sayspublished at 14:48 British Summer Time 11 October 2023

Insurance companies should cover cars damaged or destroyed in the fire, an industry body has reassured drivers.

In a statement, the Association of British Insurers confirmed fire damage was covered under comprehensive and third-party insurance plans.

The group advised drivers to contact their provider to make a claim, adding that it was "too early to estimate the insured cost of the fire".

It also said people whose travel plans had been affected should contact their airlines to check what compensation they were eligible for.

"Some travel polices may offer limited cover for delays or any abandonment of travel," it added.

The online departures board for London Luton Airport has the first flight scheduled to take off at 16:00 BST.

That would be nearly 19 hours after the fire first broke out.

Official communications from the airport, however, currently say flights should restart at 15:00 BST.

  18. Father returning from Romania trip 'made first call to 999'published at 14:36 British Summer Time 11 October 2023

John Shaw, 30, from Oxford, was told by call handlers he was the first person to call 999 after spotting the fire at Luton Airport at 20:45 BST.

He was returning from a family trip to Romania with his partner and nine-month-old daughter.“We were sat there not knowing what to do, whether to evacuate or not. Everybody was in a state of panic and then it starts spreading to the floor above," he said.

“As this happens my car comes into sight in the car park. I get my daughter, partner and luggage into the car and evacuate as quickly as possible.

“We could hear explosions as well and were worried about things flying off, like bits of shrapnel.

“As soon as we got in the car I headed for the exit as quickly as possible.

“We were fortunate. If our flight was delayed or if we were a few minutes longer collecting our luggage we may not have been able to get our car out of the car park," he said.

  19. Emergency services build access roadpublished at 14:25 British Summer Time 11 October 2023

Workmen and construction vehicles were spotted digging up land next the car park for the new road.

Emergency services are currently building an access road into the unaffected car park at the airport.

This is so people can retrieve their cars while work is carried out on the damaged areas.

  20. Temporary drop-off areapublished at 14:20 British Summer Time 11 October 2023

With restrictions still in place in some areas of the airport and surrounding area, there have been questions about what passengers should do when arriving.

Luton Airport says it has created a temporary drop-off area in the mid-stay car park.

Both it and the long stay car park are fully operational, the airport says.
