    Church services will be held across the Midlands this weekend to mark the centenary of the deaths of dozens of people killed in Zeppelin raids during World War One.

    The airships, pictured above in footage from British Pathe, caused destruction in Wednesbury, Walsall, Tipton and Bilston where 35 people died - 15 were also killed in Burton-upon-Trent.

    It's thought the German crews planned to bomb Liverpool but got lost in thick fog over the Black Country.

    Jeff Shannon, who has been making Land Rovers for 40 years hangs up his tool belt on the same day as the last Defender rolls off the production line.

    All 700 employees who worked on the Defender were invited to a farewell to the iconic model. 

    Land Rover also brought in some of the vehicles from the past. It was quite a send-off.

  5. Four in 10 teachers 'attacked by pupils'published at 14:24 Greenwich Mean Time 29 January 2016

    Four out of 10 teachers have experienced violence from pupils in the past year, a survey suggests.

    Of the 1,250 staff surveyed by the ATL teachers union, 77% said they had been pushed or shoved and around half were kicked or had an object thrown at them.

    Nine out of 10 staff had dealt with challenging behaviour, such as swearing or shouting, in the past year.

  10. 'Notorious' Wolverhampton brother sent back to jail for failing to repay 'ill-gotten gains'published at 12:35 Greenwich Mean Time 29 January 2016

    A Wolverhampton money launderer dubbed "notorious" by police has been sent back to prison for failing to repay what a court dubbed proceeds of his previous crimes.

    Carl Johnson, 53, previously of Bushbury Road, and Anthony Johnson, of Sandy Lane, Tettenhall, were found guilty of money laundering in July 2012.  

    Police said the brothers had earned about £2.4m working as "protection" for Thomas Scragg, of Solihull, who was jailed for 17 years at Birmingham Crown Court on 9 July for a £34m tax fraud.

    Carl Johnson had been ordered to pay back £71,500 which was deemed to be "ill-gotten gains" according to police, but because he had only repaid £30,029 he was re-jailed for 452 days when he was unable to pay at Birmingham Magistrates' Court on Thursday. 

    Anthony Johnson, 54, has complied with an order to repay outstanding money, said the force.

    West Midlands Police has issued a statement in the wake of MP Jess Phillips's comments comparing sex attacks in Cologne with women being "baited and heckled" on Birmingham's Broad Street.

    Inspector Gareth Morris said: "Birmingham city centre is a safe, positive and vibrant place for people to visit, live, invest in and enjoy. 

    "Like any city centre, we of course experience issues associated with people enjoying nights out, but my team has worked hard on the policing style in recent years, together with business representatives and other partners, to achieve some great results, the biggest being a reduction in violent crimes fuelled by alcohol.

    "There is certainly nothing to suggest any crime patterns or trends related to immigration and I would invite anyone to come and enjoy a night out in Birmingham and experience what the city has to offer."
