  1. Killer dryer model was not recalled, hears inquestpublished at 17:49 British Summer Time 8 August 2016

    Twenty fires had previously been caused by a tumble dryer model that killed a Birmingham mother-of-two, an inquest heard. 

    Mishell Moloney, who was 49, died at her home on 7 February after a fire in the dryer's printed circuit board (PCB).

    The dryer's manufacturer, Beko, said the PCB had never been the identified cause of any of 20 previous fires traced to the model. 

    At the city's Coroner's Court, Andrew Mullen from Beko said "in virtually all cases" of the 20 previous fires, the cause had "been the run capacitor - I can't think of any cases that weren't." 

    He said a decision not to recall the model was taken only after a risk assessment, and consultation with Trading Standards.

    The jury in the murder trial of a Smethwick shop owner, whose body was found in a car boot in Birmingham in February, has been sent home.

    Judge Mark Wall QC informed the jury about a delay in the trial starting and that members would be contacted as to when they should return.

    A Birmingham dad, whose son was killed during the riots five years ago, says he will continue to fight for a public inquiry. 

    Haroon Jahan was one of three men who died after being hit by a car in Winson Green in 2011. 

    Nobody was brought to justice over their deaths. 

    Haroon's father, Tariq Jahan, said PM Theresa May had told him a public inquiry will cost too much.

    Fixed speed cameras have been switched on in Birmingham and Solihull, three years after they were scrapped to save money.

    They were switched off in 2013 in a bid to save about £1m a year and since then only mobile cameras have been used.

    These are the locations of the seven cameras that will operate for the next five years.

    As rescue operations to find two Birmingham teenagers who were lost at sea yesterday are scaled down, sympathy is being expressed for their families.

    Zaid Hassan is chair of the Yemeni Community Association, who co-organised the trip to Barmouth beach in Wales with 500 members of the Somali and Yemeni communities.

    He said the boys, aged 14 and 15, were struggling to get out of the water.

    A model of tumble dryer which sparked a fire that killed a mother-of-two had been involved in 20 previous reported blazes, an inquest has heard.

    Mishell Moloney, who was 49, was found dead on the floor of her bedroom in Birmingham by her sister and daughter on 7 February.

    She had been overcome by carbon monoxide fumes and smoke caused by a small fire in the dryer's printed circuit board (PCB), the inquest found.

    A father whose son died during the England riots five years ago says time has not healed his pain. 

    Tariq Jahan urged people to stay calm after his son Haroon, who was 21, was killed in Birmingham alongside two other men in August 2011. 

    He now runs a charity, named after Haroon, that helps refugees.

    A third man is due in court charged with the murder of Kenichi Phillips in Birmingham.

    The 18-year-old was shot in a car in Ladywood on 17 March.

    Deandre Bailey, 24, of no fixed address, is in custody and will appear before the city's magistrates today, police say.

    Detectives are still looking for another man who they warn should not be approached.

    The search off the Welsh coast for two Birmingham teenagers who were lost at sea has been scaled down, the Coastguard says.

    The 14 and 15-year-olds were one of 500 visitors from the Somali and Yemeni communities at Barmouth beach yesterday.

    The Coastguard said one person had been seen to "disappear under the water".

    A man is in hospital after being shot in the arm in what police believe was a targeted attack.

    The 28-year-old was shot just after 01:00 this morning on George Arthur Road in Saltley.

    The man was found in nearby Alum Rock Road with the non-life threatening injury and is in a stable condition.

    Searches for two Birmingham teenagers feared drowned off the Welsh coast have been scaled back, rescuers have said. 

    This morning, RNLI teams resumed searches for two boys, aged 14 and 15, who went missing after getting into difficulty while swimming off Barmouth beach yesterday. 

    A spokeswoman confirmed that RNLI boats helping with the two rescue attempts have now been told to stand down by the Coastguard.
