  3. Thrill-seekers were temporarily trapped on Alton Towers ridepublished at 16:48 British Summer Time 1 September 2016

    Liam Dennett, aged 33, from Cheltenham, captured this footage of people stuck on The Smiler rollercoaster before it was temporarily closed for an investigation into a report a piece of debris fell from a carriage.

    The theme park said visitors were not at risk at any time and everyone was "safely and promptly" removed from the ride.

    An allegation a Birmingham teacher agreed "to the inclusion of an undue amount of religious influence in the education of pupils" has been found not proved.

    Asif Kahn, who worked at Oldknow Academy in Birmingham, had faced allegations of misconduct.

    They includes accusations he stopped Christmas and Diwali celebrations, told pupils they should not have pet dogs and banned pupils listening to music.

    The school itself was investigated amid claims of a Muslim hardliners' plot to control several schools.

    A family friend of 30 years has been named as a suspect in the murder of a missing Wolverhampton hotelier.

    Ranjit Singh Power disappeared while on a business trip to Punjab last year.  

    Police in India want to arrest his business partner Baldev Singh Deol, also of Wolverhampton, who is believed to be in the UK.  

    His arrest warrant has been featured on Interpol's website.

  11. Alton Towers ride temporarily closed again for investigationpublished at 14:10 British Summer Time 1 September 2016

    An Alton Towers ride that crashed and injured 16 passengers last year has had to be stopped today - leaving more than 30 people stuck on board.

    The theme park says it stopped The Smiler earlier to investigate claims a piece of debris had fallen from a carriage. 

    A spokesperson said visitors were not at risk at any time and everyone was safely and promptly removed from the ride. It is expected to stay closed while staff investigate.

    In June last year, five people were seriously hurt when a carriage crashed, including Chandaben Chauhan, from Wednesbury.

    Leah Washington and Vicky Balch both needed amputations.

    Three men have been jailed for kidnapping a woman and three children.

    Mohammed Khan, 31, Muserat Khan, 36, and Ateek Khan, 28, all of West Bromwich, targeted them in Oswestry.

    Shrewsbury Crown Court

    Mohammed Khan, of Whitehall Road, was jailed for six years, Muserat Khan, of Greets Green Road, was given five years and nine months and Ateek Khan, of Oak Road, five years and six months. All admitted conspiracy to kidnap.

    Zahoor Hussain, 39, of Whitehall Road, was acquitted of the same charge.

    The case was heard at Shrewsbury Crown Court on Wednesday.
