    The children's ward at the Alexandra Hospital in Redditch officially closes today.

    Ambulances carrying under 16s will have to make the 35 to 40-minute trip to the Worcestershire Royal Hospital in Worcester.

    The trust running the hospital says children who currently use the Alexandra Hospital for things such as blood tests, outpatient appointments and scans will continue to do so. 

    It is only those who are seriously ill and require an inpatient bed, who will receive their care at Worcestershire Royal Hospital, the trust says.

  4. Dozens of lone children seeking asylum in Birmingham and the Black Countrypublished at 08:40 British Summer Time 7 September 2016

    Around a hundred asylum seeking children are being cared for by local authorities in Birmingham and the Black Country. 

    They include 72 in Birmingham and 23 in Sandwell. The largest group are boys aged 16 and 17, coming from Afghanistan.

    This comes as figures released to us under the Freedom of Information Act reveal at least 104 councils were caring for more unaccompanied minors than they were in 2015.

    The Home Office said it had increased funding to cover the costs of care and other support for unaccompanied minors.

  17. From Bermuda to the Black Country - a journey eel manage with easepublished at 17:38 British Summer Time 6 September 2016

    From one famous triangle to living down the road from our own Balti triangle - an eel thought to be more than 20 years old has been found in a canal near West Bromwich.

    The 5lb 10oz eel was found by the Canal & River Trust after nearly 200lbs of fish were rescued from the waterway when pollution was investigated along the Ridgacre Branch Canal.

    John Ellis, national fisheries and angling manager at the Canal & River Trust, said: ““Eels are such a fascinating animal, they start life as a little egg in the Sargasso Sea near Bermuda and make an epic 4,000-mile journey across the Atlantic Ocean to end up in canals and rivers across Europe and North Africa.  

    "Once they enter in the canal they will spend their life growing and maturing before returning to the Sargasso Sea to breed.”

    Residents in Bromsgrove can find out what plans there are to improve train services in the area, after the opening of the town's new £24m railway station.

    Network Rail is holding a drop-in event to explain where a further £100m is to be invested on the railway in the area.

    The next phase of the scheme will be to electrify the line between Bromsgrove and Barnt Green and increase the number of trains per hour from Bromsgrove station from December 2017.

    The line will be closed for 12 days between Tuesday, 25 October to  Sunday, 6 November.

    The drop-in event is being held tomorrow between 16:30 and 19:00 at Bromsgrove railway station.

    A man was punched in the face and kicked to the head after he fell to the ground before his mobile phone was robbed by three men in Walsall, police say.

    The victim, a 28-year-old man, was making his way to his relatives' house where he was staying after having been drinking at the Mary Rose pub, Staffordshire Police said.

    He was attacked as he walked along an alleyway off Mount Pleasant by three men - two of whom were wearing wearing motorbike helmets, the force said.

    The trio demanded the man's iPhone 6. Officers are urging people to come forward with information about the robbery on Saturday.
