    The Odeon Cinema, at Five Ways in Birmingham, is provoking anger among religious groups by opening on Christmas Day.

    The city centre cinema is one of 20 Odeons around the country to treat 25 December as a regular trading day.

    Bosses say watching a film is a popular activity on Christmas Day and staff who volunteer will be paid extra.

  3. Children's services to be taken over next yearpublished at 17:49 Greenwich Mean Time 30 November 2016

    The new government-appointed trust which will provide children's social care services in Sandwell could be up and running by summer 2017. 

    The government announced plans in October to introduce an independent trust to run the area's children's social care services following back-to-back poor Ofsted ratings.

    Sandwell Council says significant progress has been made on the proposals and a report is set to go before the council's cabinet next week.

    A school in Birmingham is trying to tackle obesity by buying healthy food and selling it on to parents.

    Hillstone Primary, in Shard End, set up the scheme because of concerns about increasing numbers of overweight children. 

    The school's chef is putting together food boxes which can feed a family of four for a week for £1 per meal.

    Recipes include shepherd's pie, sausage casserole and chicken burritos.  

  9. PC hit by car: Images released of 'vehicles involved'published at 17:15 Greenwich Mean Time 30 November 2016

    Images have been released of two vehicles which police say were involved in an incident which led to a policeman being hit by a car. 

    According to Staffordshire Police, a "suspicious" lorry was pulled over on the A5 between Wall Island and Weeford Island and the driver got out and ran off.

    They say he was chased by their officer who was then attacked with a tree branch, leading to the officer stepping into the road and being hit by a car. 

    The second image is of a Ford Fiesta which the force say the suspect escaped in after carjacking it - it was later found abandoned.

    Significant delays remain on the railway line between between Wolverhampton and Birmingham due to overhead line problems.

    Some services have been cancelled and others diverted, causing severe congestion.

  13. Appeal for witnesses after police officer seriously injuredpublished at 16:12 Greenwich Mean Time 30 November 2016

    Police are appealing for witnesses after an officer was left with serious injuries following an attempt to stop a suspicious HGV in Tamworth.

    The driver of the HGV got out after a chase along the A5 near Lichfield yesterday evening and confronted and threatened the officer with a tree branch. 

    The injuries happened when he stepped back to avoid it and was hit by another vehicle.

    The officer is in hospital with serious leg and chest injuries and is said to be a stable condition.

    After the officer was struck, the lorry driver made off in stolen car which was later found abandoned in Pelsall, Walsall.

    The suspect is described as slim, white and about 6ft tall (1.8m). He wore dark clothing.

    A tribute's been unveiled at St Mary's Catholic Primary School, in Wednesbury, West Midlands, in memory of former pupil Joel Richards.

    The 19-year-old student, who studied at the University of Worcester, was killed in a terror attack in Tunisia in June 2015 alongside his uncle and grandad.

    The level of support from people across Staffordshire for a police officer who's been seriously injured on duty have been "overwhelming", the force says.

    Staffordshire Police say the 39-year-old, from Tamworth, was hit by a car while being threatened by the driver of a stolen lorry on the A5 near Lichfield last night. 

    Ch Insp Jason Nadin (featured in video) says the officer has serious chest and leg injuries and is waiting on further checks to work out whether they will be life-changing.

    The train operator is warning of signifcant delays to its services due to overhead line problems at Smethwick.
