Kieran Gillespie, of Wellesbourne Road, Birmingham, appeared at Birmingham Magistrates' Court charged with murdering Leon Barrett-Hazle, from Smethwick, on the 11A service late on Monday night.
Mr Gillespie, 25, spoke only to confirm his name, age and address.
A further hearing is due to take place at Birmingham Crown Court on 30 January.

A man charged with the murder of a passenger who was stabbed to death on the top deck of a bus is due to appear in court later.
Leon Barrett-Hazle (pictured), 36, was knifed several times during the fatal attack on the 11A service in Handsworth, Birmingham, on Monday.
Kieran Gillespie, 25, of Wellesbourne Road, Handsworth, is due to appear before Birmingham Magistrates' Court on Friday, West Midlands Police said.

The families of the victims of the Birmingham Pub bombings say they're hoping their fight for justice can finally move forward.
The government announced yesterday its proposal to change the law so the families could apply for legal aid ahead of fresh inquests into the deaths of those killed in the 1974 blasts.
The inquests are due to resume later this year.
