Police say a man, 90, jailed for a string of historical sex offences against a boy in care is suspected of having come into contact with children at several care homes in Birmingham.

Frederick Cranston, known as Bill, from Castle Bromwich, is a former social services worker who met the boy in the 1980s at a centre for children awaiting foster families.

For the campaign of abuse to which he subjected his victim, Cranston, who admitted eight offences, was given a 12-year prison sentence, but police think there are potentially others who suffered.

Det Con Jonathan Barker said: “We believe Cranston’s employment in the 1980s would have brought him into contact with children at several care homes in Birmingham.

"If anyone else has suffered at his hands I’d urge them to get in touch so we can equally secure justice for them."

She said of the trip: "I’ve been involved in tackling and raising awareness of FGM in the West Midlands and on a national level, but I wanted to join the people who are trying to stop it at source and to help vulnerable girls.

“I spoke to 35 cutters - women who perform the procedure. It was a very frank discussion about the practice, the awful side effects and impact it has on their lives.

“I think we really struck a chord with them. Some regretted cutting girls, asking if they could reverse the procedure, and agreed they wanted their children and grandchildren to be able to enjoy sex and vowed to protect them against FGM."
