The authority announced in September 2016 it was looking to bid and anticipated the event could bring a £390m windfall to the city - so it launched a so-called feasiblity study to weigh up the decision.

Councillors will decide if they will proceed with the bid by the end of the year, the authority's deputy leader Ian Ward said, and it appears likely Birmingham will be competing against Liverpool.

Mr Ward said: “The economic growth that can be delivered to the city if we are successful in hosting a games will be huge.

"The housing that we require in the future just for Birmingham is an additional 89,000 homes between now and 2031 and this will be a catalyst for helping to deliver some of those as well.

"There’s really nothing to lose here."
