    The company operating a chicken processing plant in Smethwick says 90 workers face losing their jobs when it closes at the end of this month.

    The 2 Sisters Food Group said it was "working hard to explore all job opportunities" and was hopeful roles would be found for them.

    It said 290 out of 630 staff would be redeployed to its other sites in the West Midlands, with 250 people deciding to take severance packages.

    "It’s with much regret that we have had to close one of the original 2 Sisters sites," a statement said.

    In April, the group said the 21-year-old plant at Bevan Way was "ageing".

    About 300 workers face redundancy at a poultry processing plant in Smethwick, according to the union Unite.

    The union said the closure of the plant, run by the 2 Sisters Food Group, was set for 23 June and was "very disappointing".

    Julia Long, Unite's national officer for the food industry, said that through negotiations the union had "managed to save about 250 jobs" which would be taken up by other 2 Sisters sites in the region.

    "Unfortunately," she said, "this still means some 300 workers face redundancy."

    In April, the group said the plant, which employs 630 people at Alpha Business Park, Bevan Way, was "ageing", with Unite saying today the need for "dramatic modernisation" meant the closure and redundancy risk was the "only achievable outcome".

    A teenager from Lichfield says she was "very nervous" at going to the benefit concert held in the wake of the Manchester attack.

    Zinni Wright had been taken by her father to the Ariana Grande concert on 22 May when a suicide bomber struck.

  10. Vigil in Birmingham for victims of London attackpublished at 09:37 British Summer Time 5 June 2017

    A "unity vigil" will be held in Birmingham city centre in tribute to the seven people killed and 48 injured in Saturday's terror attack in London.

    The event,, external organised by Stand Up to Racism Birmingham, takes place between 17:00 and 18:00 in High Street.

    Organisers have asked people to bring candles and hold a minute's silence.

    Extra police patrols have been put in place across the region following the terrorist attack in London.

    Chief Constable Dave Thompson of West Midlands Police said the force was in close contact with Met colleagues "to offer our support and to understand more about the attack".

    He said the force was reviewing its plans and called on people to remain alert.
