Craftsman Sam Dallow, of 6th Battalion The Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers, based at Tidworth, admitted attempting to meet a child following sexual grooming earlier today.

The sting was carried out at Andover train station on 11 April, where Dallow thought he was meeting the girl he had been messaging, only to be met by Mr Brannigan and a colleague who filmed their exchange.

Mr Brannigan handed the footage and Dallow's explicit online exchanges to Hampshire Police.

It is the latest case to use evidence gathered by a small but increasingly prominent band of self-styled paedophile hunters.

The vigilantes say they are helping out police forces; claiming their budgets are at breaking point, by doing the detective work detectives are unable to do themselves.

Mr Brannigan told the BBC: "Saying and crying they've got no money, no resources, no funding, there isn't enough people in the team to do this sort of thing so leave it to people like me who actually care about the investigation."

  11. Police say paedophile hunters put children at riskpublished at 18:35 British Summer Time 17 May 2017

Police say rather than being helpful, amateur detectives can jeopardise ongoing investigations and provide paedophiles with a chance to destroy evidence.

National Policing Lead on Child Abuse Investigation, Chief Constable Simon Bailey, of Norfolk Police, said: "They are taking risks they don't understand.

"We understand the desire to protect children but any member of the public who has information about child sexual abuse, online or otherwise, should get in contact with the police so we can investigate and bring people to justice.

"Revealing the identity of suspected paedophiles gives the suspect the opportunity to destroy evidence before the police can investigate them."
