    Students moving out of halls at Keele University have given three tonnes of food to Newcastle-under-Lyme's food bank.

    They filled 300 crates as they moved out this summer.

    The university believes that equates to 7,000 meals for people in need.

  2. Fish rescued from 'mysterious disappearing river'published at 16:35 British Summer Time 11 October 2017

    About 300 fish have been rescued from the River Dore in Herefordshire, which has dried up because of a lack of rain.

    The Environment Agency says a member of the public spotted the fish coming to the surface to gasp for breath.

    They became trapped in what's left of the Dore near Peterchurch, described by Environment Agency manager Dave Throup as the "mysterious disappearing river".

    The organisation say the fish, mainly trout and a few eels, have been moved further downstream.

    A 28-year-old woman from Worcestershire is preparing to realise her life-long dream of sailing around the world.

    Susie Goodall trains with Himley Hall sailing club near Wolverhampton and is rebuilding a yacht at a boatyard in Falmouth, in preparation for the Golden Globe race next summer.

    She hopes to emulate the success of Sir Robin Knox-Johnston, who made history by winning the race half a century ago.

    Struggling pet chain Just for Pets has been rescued from the administrators by a supply firm.

    Buyer Pedigree Wholesale, which supplies pet, aquatic and garden centre products to shops, plans to keep 200 jobs, but said seven of the 25 Just for Pets stores would close, including three in the Midlands - Evesham, Burton-upon-Trent and Yardley.

    The future of the Worcestershire-based pet retail chain was uncertain but now 18 stores across the country will continue operations including Coventry, Telford, Wolverhampton and Worcester.

  7. Blindness charity working with village churchpublished at 15:34 British Summer Time 11 October 2017

    A village church near Shrewsbury is teaming up with the Royal National Institute of Blind People, external to offer maps, models and books for people with visual impairments.

    St Lucia's in Upton Magna is one of only two in the country to be named after patron saint of people with eyesight problems.

    A grant of £8,500 from the Heritage Lottery Fund will be used to pay for the additions.

    The church is also planning to bid for £204,300 at a later date, to pay for repairs to the 12th Century building.

    A severe fire at a brass fittings factory in Wolverhampton this morning was accidental, say the fire service.

    More than 20 firefighters attended to the blaze at SPS Brassware on Owen Road in Merridale at about 08:50 this morning.

    A spokesperson for the fire service said a mechanical issue with one of the ovens led to blaze in one of the bay areas and spread to an adjoining area.

    The company produces a range of brass ware, from door knockers to light switch covers.

  10. Cyclist dies in Birmingham - 'It's time to get angry'published at 14:42 British Summer Time 11 October 2017

    A bike shop in Birmingham says, external it's "time to get angry" about how we treat cyclists following the death of a 32-year-old woman.

    In a blog post by Urban Cycles the firm writes: "I do not know how but I know more than ever, that I am determined to blur the lines of possibility and imagination in the small conviction that my grand children might cycle in a city I could only dream of."

    Suzanna Bull died on Monday afternoon after being hit by a lorry near Edgbaston Road.

    A road in Coventry has been closed off after a telegraph pole fell this afternoon.

    We're told that Ringwood Highway is expected to be closed to all traffic until 18:00 while it is made safe.

    Diversions are in place and bus services are terminating at Potters Green.

  13. Peaty 'nervous' as he picks up MBE at palacepublished at 14:07 British Summer Time 11 October 2017

    Swimmer Adam Peaty has been appointed an MBE at a ceremony at Buckingham Palace.

    The Rio gold-medallist, from Uttoxeter, currently holds world records in the 50m and 100m breaststroke.

    He was presented with his latest award by the Duke of Cambridge and admitted to being a "little bit nervous" ahead of his trip to the palace.

    The owners of Worcester's new Cathedral Square shopping centre say they will prosecute people caught trespassing on the roof of the building.

    Pictures on some social media sites show teenagers running around on the roof taking selfies after scaling a seven-foot (2m) fence.

  15. Police sergeant sacked following fraud convictionpublished at 13:46 British Summer Time 11 October 2017

    A serving Staffordshire Police officer has been dismissed, following his conviction for fraud at Birmingham Crown Court last month.

    The decision to sack 37-year-old Sergeant David Gimbert from Mow Cop was made by a hearing chaired by Chief Constable Gareth Morgan today.

    The hearing found he had breached the professional standards expected of him and the chief constable said he had to act to maintain public confidence in his force.

    A stately home owned by the former Judas Priest guitarist KK Downing is looking for new owners after the companies operating it went into administration.

    Administrators FRP Advisory said that "after years of successful management" Astbury Hall and its golf course had fallen victim to "tougher economic times within the wider corporate hospitality market".

    The administrators will keep the hall and golf club running until new owners can be found.
