  5. Countryside group 'dismayed' by housing proposalspublished at 18:43 British Summer Time 11 October 2017

    Andy Giddings
    BBC News

Plans to allow nearly 29,000 homes to be built in Shropshire over the next 20 years have been criticised by the Campaign to Protect Rural England (CPRE).

It said house building of this scale would be "unacceptable" and the Shropshire Council proposals would not provide homes in the areas where they were most needed.

And the CPRE said the way the authority had come up with this proposed target was "highly questionable", adding, "there is not the evidence to support the figure".

    Quote Message

To say that CPRE Shropshire is disappointed by Shropshire Council’s housing recommendations would be a gross understatement. We are concerned that its 20-year plans are about the numbers and growth game and not about providing the houses that are really needed in the right places

  12. Is Royal Leamington Spa really the UK's happiest town?published at 18:06 British Summer Time 11 October 2017

    Riyah Collins
    BBC News

The Warwickshire town has been rated the happiest place to live in the UK, but what do statistics know?

I've been speaking to the people of Royal Leamington Spa today to find out just how happy they are, and what it is about the spa town which makes it such a joyous place to live.

Overall the people I spoke to weren't surprised to be living in the happiest place, citing the friendly nature of residents and sense of community.

Hannah Antrobus, 27, born and bred in Warwickshire, says strangers in the town have been known to pay for her parking when she doesn't have the right change.

It was a sentiment shared by Neil Jones, although he told me couldn't afford to live in Leamington Spa, where house prices are £20,000 more than the national average.

"The rent's high, the house prices are high, so to afford a place I had to move back to Birmingham," he says.

His report reveals 701 needles were left on our streets in the last year, but in reality that figure is believed to be much higher.
