    The death of a Herefordshire woman who died after being hit by a motorboat whilst snorkeling in Malaysia in 2013 was an accident, the county coroner has recorded.

    Madaline Cole, a 25-year-old conservationist from Bodenham, had worked on whale-shark and turtle conservation programmes and was a qualified diving instructor.

    The inquest heard how she was hit by the boat near Perhentian Besar Island and was taken to a health clinic but no doctors were there to help her.

    A Malaysian police investigation concluded that her death was an accident, but her parents say other people have been killed in the same way and they feel that justice hasn't been done.

    Police say they have extra officers in the Hillfields area of Coventry assisting with the "safe passage" of a funeral procession.

    Hundreds of people attended a service in memory of Tyrone Shields, who died in a crash on the A444 last month.

    Motorcyclists took part in a procession from St Mary and Benedict's Church in Raglan Street to the burial site in Lenton Lane, passing the site of the crash.

    A severe fire at a disused factory site in Walsall last night is being treated as arson, says the fire service.

    About 20 firefighters tackled the blaze on Green Lane after being called shortly after 17:40.

    Police closed the road for a time, but this was reopened later in the evening.

  5. Couple arrested after leaving 'bag of drugs' at restaurantpublished at 13:58 British Summer Time 20 October 2017

    A young couple have been arrested at a restaurant after leaving behind a bag containing cash and what is believed to be class A drugs, police say.

    The pair rang the diner on Thursday night to check their belongings were still there, after leaving the bag behind.

    But when they returned to the restaurant, in Sutton Coldfield, Birmingham, to collect them, officers were waiting for them.

    The pair, both 19, have been detained on suspicion of possession with intent to supply and money laundering and remain in police custody.

    Stoke City will have Joe Allen available for selection for tomorrow's game at home to Bournemouth.

    He missed last weekend's match at Manchester City after suffering a concussion while playing for Wales.

    Stoke manager Mark Hughes said Allen had passed all the necessary tests following his head injury and had had "a decent week".

    The scheme is one of more than a dozen road improvement projects that have been put back or face cancellation.

    The organisation said they were being "paused for further review" to achieve an "acceptable return on investment".

    The update also saw 10 schemes being brought forward.

    A woman who campaigned to be an MP in Stoke-on-Trent has appeared at the city's crown court and denied charges of stirring up racial hatred, after allegedly praising Hitler on her online blog.

    Barbara Fielding-Morriss pleaded not guilty to publishing written material to stir up racial hatred and sending offensive material by public communication.

    The 78-year-old stood as an independent in June's general election and in the Stoke-on-Trent Central by-election in February.

    She is set to stand trial on 24 April 2018.

  13. Community nursing home threatened with closurepublished at 12:18 British Summer Time 20 October 2017

    A Shropshire nursing home is under threat of closure due to lack of funds, it says.

    The eight-bed home in Ellesmere is run by a community trust that relies on fundraising and bequests to pay the bills - but that's not been enough to cover recent costs.

    It's now running an annual defecit of £90,000 - and had been using reserves to make up the shortfall, but they've now run out.

    The trust says it's involved in last-ditch attempts to find other sources of income - but there's every possibility the home will have to close in the coming months.

    A water pipe that burst in Malvern yesterday, flooding Lower Howsell Road, has been fixed, Severn Trent says.

    However, Worcestershire County Council says the road surface has been damaged and it's put up temporary traffic lights while it's fixed.

  15. Man suffers serious injuries in M42 crashpublished at 11:33 British Summer Time 20 October 2017

    A man has been left with serious leg injuries after a crash on the M42 in the early hours of this morning, says the ambulance service., external

    The incident involved a van and a lorry on the M42 between J3a and J4 near Hockley Heath, Solihull just before 02:30.

    Fire crews worked for about an hour to cut the van driver, thought to be in his 30s, free from the vehicle.
