    The centre says it believes Benedict was deliberately targeted, because his breed is popular with people who like hare-coursing.

    Concrete barriers are being put up in Birmingham city centre ahead of its annual Frankfurt Christmas Market.

    West Midlands Police says the installation is part of planned security measures and not as a result of any specific threat or intelligence.

    Supt Andy Parsons said: "Obviously we are all aware of the tragic events that have taken place nationally and internationally. The barriers are not in response to a threat but are a preventative measure."

    Last year, police added the barriers around the city centre market on New Street as a precaution, in the wake of the terror attack in Berlin, when a lorry crashed into people killing 12 people.

    Former Stoke goalkeeper Asmir Begovic has backed current number one Jack Butland to continue to play for England.

    Butland was Begovic's understudy until the Bosnian left for Chelsea in 2015, and Butland's performances since then have earned him five caps.

    A baby rhino, born on 8 September, has been taking her first steps outside her paddock.

    Fahari is only the second white rhino born at the West Midland Safari Park in Worcestershire in the last 10 years.

    Her name means "splendour" in Swahili and her keepers say she is "a healthy, adorable little character".

    A woman has been jailed for setting light to her former council house in Coventry.

    Samantha Capewell went to her former flat in Devon House, on Bantock Road, on 3 March and started a fire in the communal entrance, police said.

    The 48-year-old was jailed, external for four years at Warwick Crown Court on 20 October after admitting starting the blaze.

    Capewell was found nearby after the fire with five cigarette lighters, police said, adding that she later pleaded guilty after CCTV emerged of her starting the blaze, external.

    Nobody was injured in the fire.

    The Conservative leader of Shropshire Council says the Clive Barracks near Market Drayton should be turned into an airport.

    The army is due to move off the site at Tern Hill in the next five years and the authority has said recently the site could be suitable for homes.

    But councillor Peter Nutting points out it already has a "longish runway" which he said "would work quite well" and is close to the A41.

    A public inquiry next month, into plans to build a row of shops on a car park in Bridgnorth, is expected to last four days.

    Shropshire Council approved the Smithfield Road development plans, but that is being challenged by the town's chamber of commerce.

    It says the loss of 150 parking spaces, plus twice as many during construction, will "decimate the town".

    The search is on to find a Good Samaritan who helped a 14-year-old girl who was attacked by two different men in one night in Birmingham.

    The 14-year-old girl was raped at Witton Railway station in July before being sexually assaulted in a car she flagged down to help her, police said.

    Two men have now been charged.

    Police have described the Good Samaritan as white, approximately 30 to 40 years old and slim with facial stubble, who drove the girl home to her family in a distressed state.

    British Transport Police said the man spoke with a Birmingham accent and was driving a seven-seater family car with "a lot of air fresheners hanging from the rear view mirror".

    The possibility of homes being built on the site of the former Ironbridge Power Station is generating a lot of comment on the BBC Radio Shropshire Facebook page., external

    Alison Jayne Harsum was one of several to be upset by the idea. She commented: "Its very sad to think part of our history can just be knocked to the ground, to make way for development."

    And Darran Dorsett brought up another concern. He wrote: "My only concern is that once this land has been developed, more development will be passed in the surrounding area will start to be developed."

    But others were in favour of the land being used for housing.

    Jon Edward wrote: "It's gonna get developed as it's brownfield site. It's a huge power station, as opposed to houses. I know what I'd rather live next to."

    And Ian Mark Hollis agreed. He wrote: "Knock them down. Upgrade the railway back to passenger standard and allow the area to thrive again. Keep one if you really think they will bring tourists in."

    These are the items found by police at the home of a married couple who were in the midst of planning a terror attack in their home city of Birmingham.

    Prosecutors said Madihah Taheer had bought the knife using her credit card, while her husband Ummariyat Mirza trained on a martial arts dummy and bought cord to create a shoulder harness to hide the knife.

    Mirza was obsessed with replica knives and replica guns. He said the attack wouldn't have been possible without his loyal and loving support of his wife.

    A week after the Westminster attack in March, Mirza wanted to rampage across his home city.

    His plan wasn't fully formed when he was arrested but he's admitted preparing for attack of terrorism by researching targets including the city's RAF careers office and Birmingham's central synagogue.

  18. Four conservation areas added to 'at risk' registerpublished at 14:32 British Summer Time 26 October 2017

    Conservation areas in Kidderminster, Whitchurch in Shropshire, Austin Village in Birmingham and Ribbesford near Bewdley have all been added to Historic England's "at risk" register.

    There are 24 additions to the list in the West Midlands this year and with 37 being removed, that takes the total in the region to 416.

    Among the sites removed from the register is the 18th Century Nags Head engine house at Pontesbury in Shropshire (pictured below), which has been repaired with funding from Historic England.

    Nationally, the register now lists 5,290 historic buildings, places of worship, gardens, battlefields and protected wrecks under threat from "neglect, decay or inappropriate development".
