  10. Could Beeching lines reopen?published at 12:36 Greenwich Mean Time 29 November 2017

    Peter Plisner
    BBC Midlands Today

A freight route running through Birmingham is among the rail routes shut in the 1960s Beeching cuts that the government is looking to reopen.

Transport Secretary Chris Grayling said rail lines would be reopened if they unlock jobs, encourage house building, ease congestion and offer "value for money".

But government plans to reopen lines them could be restricted because some routes have been built on.

A lack of long-term planning has meant many closed lines in the Midlands would require compulsory purchase orders to get them reopened.

  14. Cause of fatal Alabama Rot 'not clear'published at 11:42 Greenwich Mean Time 29 November 2017

A dog has died in Staffordshire after picking-up a rare kidney disease called Alabama Rot.

Many dog walkers have taken to social media telling people to avoid Cannock Chase, though vets say it's not possible to say exactly where it was contracted or how.

    Quote Message

We're not exactly sure what the cause is. We know it seems most cases happen between December and May with clusters more commonly in the winter months. It was initially thought it was just confined to woodland areas but that isn't necessarily the case. All I would say is, in damp winter weather maybe trips to the woodland probably shouldn't be as common as the rest of the year, but that's just speculative."

Vet Philip Parry-Smith explains some of the symptoms to look out for: "Some dogs may start with blue-coloured stools and diarrhoea before any skin lesions appear.

"The kidneys are beginning to get damaged. Lots of dogs come in with skin lesions so it's how you differentiate between a so-called normal lesion and Alabama Rot."
