    Snow could cause problems for both morning and evening rush hours in the West Midlands tomorrow.

    Snow and ice has been forecast for large parts of the UK in the wake of Caroline on Friday and Saturday.

  2. Lords to debate vice-chancellors' paypublished at 17:18 Greenwich Mean Time 7 December 2017

    Former Labour education minister Lord Adonis is going to call in a House of Lords debate tomorrow for an independent inquiry into the pay of university vice-chancellors.

    He described the £800,000 awarded to Bath Spa's retiring vice chancellor Prof Christina Slade in pay and compensation as "a sick joke" "at the expense of students".

    In September, University of Birmingham vice-chancellor Sir David Eastwood was named among the highest earners, taking home £426,000 in salary and pensions.

    The average remuneration for vice chancellors in 2015-16 stood at £257,904.

    North Shropshire College is to merge with Herefordshire and Ludlow College.

    Previous plans for it to merge with Reaseheath in Nantwich fell through over concerns about long-term finances.

    Gillian Richards, chair of governors at North Shropshire College, described the merger with Herefordshire and Ludlow College, as an "exciting development".

    On Friday, we'll bring you updates on the snow and how it is affecting the region on this live page, if you want to bookmark it. You can also tune into BBC Local Radio and BBC Midlands Today.

    The Met Office is forecasting snow, external up to 5cm (2 inches) deep in parts of the West Midlands tomorrow, with Shropshire and Staffordshire the most likely to be affected.

    Those two counties could even see snow up to 20cm (8 inches) in places and the latest forecasts suggest other parts of the region could also see both snow and plenty of ice.

    Temperatures are expected to drop below freezing overnight, so the emergency services are warning people to beware of ice on the roads, external and allow extra time to completely clear windscreens.

    Routes through the Peak District, including Britain's highest village Flash are often among the first to be affected.

    It's possible some schools may be closed and local authorities will update their websites with the latest information.

    The most likely to be affected are schools in the Staffordshire, external, Stoke-on-Trent, external, Telford and Wrekin, external, and Shropshire, external local authority areas.

    If you suffer a life-threatening emergency the advice, as always, is to dial 999.

    However, the NHS is advising people to avoid A&E unless absolutely necessary and, if it's not serious, you might be seen quicker if you visit a local minor injuries unit or even a pharmacist.

    A group of travellers are still at a sports centre in Worcester despite being issued with a notice to leave earlier in the week.

    The city council says an enforcement officer is going to speak to them at Perdiswell Leisure Centre today.

    The authority says, if they don’t leave by the end of the day, it will have to decide whether to issue court papers.

    Preparations for the forecast heavy snow overnight and tomorrow in Staffordshire won't just involve the council's gritting teams and snow ploughs.

    The local authority says it has dozens of "Ice Busters, external" across the area volunteering to clear pathways.

    They say the scheme sees groups like parish councils get advice as well as grit/brine to treat locally important areas, external to keep them clear for residents.

    The news that General Electric is going to cut 500 jobs in Stafford will come as a massive blow to the town.

    Earlier this year, GE opened a new Redhill Grid Automation in the county town , externaland at the time said it was "the largest employer in Stafford" with 1,700 employees.

    What today's announcement means for the future of its power business in the town remains to be seen.
