A Shropshire game-shooter has launched a conservation trust to help protect the woodcock.
Charlie Pinkney, from Boraton near Ludlow, says the number of breeding males in the UK has fallen by nearly a third since 2003, partly because of shooting.
Mr Pinkney said modern farming techniques, predators and a decline in insect numbers were also factors.
He said he'd offer a bottle of gin to anyone who sent him photos of themselves doffing their cap to the birds, rather than shooting them.
Quote MessageSo when you see them, instead of looking out there at the bird as a potential target, enjoy the bird for what it is, flying past you."
