  7. Teenager admits Syria travel plan to aid ISpublished at 19:04 Greenwich Mean Time 23 January 2018

    An 18-year-old woman from Coventry has admitted planning to travel to Syria last summer to work as a nurse supporting so-called Islamic State terrorists.

    Sandeep Samra, a Muslim convert from Alder Road in the city, denies intending to carry out acts of violence in support of Daesh, but at Birmingham Crown Court pleaded guilty to a single count of engaging in conduct in preparation for terrorist acts.

    Ms Samra, from a Sikh background, faces a court hearing to decide whether she intended to commit terrorist acts herself. Prosecutors allege social media messages show Samra - who claims she only planned to help Isis as a nurse - intended to die.

    She is expected to give evidence to the trial-of-issue on Wednesday.

    The West Midlands Chief Constable has spoken of the of the "high profile, very tragic case", of Mylee Billingham paying tribute to the emergency staff who attended the incident.

    Ch Con David Thompson told a meeting earlier that one of the benefits of body cameras is that it enables officers to see "the challenges and things our staff have to deal with".

    "In this particular case the work that took place...was just so intense and its just very, very, sad that on this occasion it wasn't able to make a difference."

    He told the board: "I would pay tribute to the work that took place on the scene that night by those people because that is simply not the sort of incident that anybody joins the police service to expect to deal with but actually deal with it people do."

    The team chef for the England men's rugby team has become a food ambassador at New College, Worcester.

    Patrick McDonald, who has a Michelin star, will work with blind and visually impaired children to teach them about food and help them to get better exam grades.

  13. Hunt for two men over violent robberiespublished at 18:29 Greenwich Mean Time 23 January 2018

    Pictures have been released of two men for whom police are looking in connection with a series of violent robberies.

    Jimmy Connors (below, left) who is 28 and 17-year-old Tom Ward (below, right) are suspected of stealing jewellery worth thousands of pounds.

    West Midlands Police said Ward was wanted for questioning about a robbery in Sparkhill on 7 December in which the occupants of a house were assaulted with a pick axe handle.

    The force said Connors, wanted on a recall to prison, was also being sought by detectives from Met Police over three London break-ins, one of which saw a victim threatened with nunchucks and a hammer.

    Moseley Heath Police tweeted details of the raid saying their officers were executing a drugs warrent in the area.

    A spokesman for West Midlands Police said: “Officers attended an address in Wake Green Road, Moseley, at around 7.10am today and discovered just over 50 cannabis plants.

    “A 42 year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of cultivation of cannabis.”

  15. Carillion employees in 'chaos'published at 18:09 Greenwich Mean Time 23 January 2018

    Rail workers are in a state of "chaos" over the collapse of construction company Carillion, a union says.

    Research by the Rail, Maritime and Transport (RMT) union found few of the affected rail employees had been contacted by the liquidator.

    Only one in 20 workers who took part in the survey thought the government had handled the situation well.

    Carillion employees working on Network Rail projects have been told their wages are guaranteed to mid-April, while those on the HS2 rail project and Smart Motorways scheme in England have been offered the chance to join other companies.

    An old horse called Chance has been given a second one after being rescued from a ditch in north Shropshire.

    Last night the 26-year-old was found on his back, covered in a foot of mud, and tangled in wire fencing in a field in St Martin's.

    It took 15 fire fighters to pull him from the ditch.

    Despite his three-hour ordeal, he is recovering in his stable - does that count as a stable condition?

    Production is being scaled back at the Jaguar Land Rover plant in Castle Bromwich.

    Special "shutdown" weeks have already been taking place to reduce the number of vehicles made there - with more planned.

    The news came as the company formally announced plans to cut production at its giant plant at Halewood on Merseyside.

    No similar announcement is due here in the Midlands although JLR is not ruling one out.
