  17. Council leader fears 'backdoor closure' of A&Epublished at 16:50 Greenwich Mean Time 1 February 2018

Telford could be on a "slippery slope" to permanently lose its accident and emergency service if staff shortages force temporary overnight closures, the leader of Telford and Wrekin Council has warned.

The Shrewsbury and Wrekin Hospital Trust is considering the emergency move because a resignation has left it short of consultants.

    Shaun Davies

Telford and Wrekin Council has opposed NHS proposals to downgrade the town's A&E department and move women and children's services to Shrewsbury.

Those plans are likely to be consulted on later in the year, but councillor Shaun Davies said he feared the hospitals might take this opportunity to cut services without the need for that consultation.

    Quote Message

In March 2017 we warned that overnight closure of A&E risked becoming a downgrading by the backdoor of our hospital and I was accused of crying wolf. Well that wolf is now well and truly at the PRH’s doors. A closure on the grounds of clinical safety can be made without any public consultation."

Councillor Shaun Davies, Telford and Wrekin Council
