    A mother who murdered her seven-year-old son will be sentenced later.

    Archie Spriggs died at his home in Rushbury, near Church Stretton, Shropshire, in September last year.

    The court heard that his mother, 44-year-old Lesley Speed, who suffers from severe depression and anxiety, claimed she found her son hanging from his scarf in his bedroom.

    She'll appear at Birmingham Crown Court.

    A Grade I-listed timber-framed country house in Cheshire's been badly damaged by a fire at the weekend. , external

    Firefighters were called to Haslington Hall in Haslington, on Saturday.

    Today, Cheshire Police said the site had suffered extensive damage and the cause was still under investigation.

    The force says there was a "lot of activity" at the site the day before the blaze and they're appealing for witnesses.

    They also say two trailers full of "event gear" were stolen.

    The company, which is headquartered in Evesham, employs 735 people around the country and has 48 stores.

    It is one of the UK's leading suppliers of agricultural goods but went into administration earlier this month.

    Administrator KPMG says it remains open to interest from potential buyers and the announced redundancies are being made at the firm's headquarters.

    It's been revealed a dozen football shirts were stolen from the Port Vale club shop in Stoke-on-Trent in the burglary at the weekend., external

    The break-in saw the front window of the store on Hamil Road smashed in, with police saying they think it happened between 03:00 and 06:00 today.

    Officers say two tills, missing from the shop, have now been found, but about £60 was stolen.

    They also say 12 retro club shirts were also taken along with several children's hoodies and tracksuit tops with the Port Vale emblem on them.

    Market traders are being assured they won't lose their livelihoods, despite uncertainty over who will be running the site.

    The private company which currently runs Bromsgrove's market has announced it's pulling out in June because it's no longer financially viable. , external

    A decision now has to be made over whether to bring in another company to run the market or if the district council should take control.

  10. Fire service takeover: Approved despite huge oppositionpublished at 18:18 British Summer Time 26 March 2018

    Control of Staffordshire's fire service will move to the county's police and crime commissioner (PCC), external, despite opposition from councils and the FBU.

    PCC Matthew Ellis proposed the idea last year and the Home Office today approved it.

    During last year's consultation, both Stoke-on-Trent City Council, external and the county council were against the scheme, raising concerns that the change could affect safety.

    They both welcomed more collaboration between the emergency services but said the existing fire authority was "well regarded" and didn't see why it needed replacing. , external

    The Fire Brigades Union opposed the move on the grounds, externalit felt it " risked undermining public confidence" in the fire service.

    A Stoke-on-Trent Labour MP who is Jewish says Jeremy Corbyn needs to do more to tackle the issue of anti-Semitism in the party.

    It comes as Mr Corbyn's seeking an "urgent meeting" with Jewish leaders to discuss their concerns.

    They have accused the Labour leader of not doing enough to tackle the issue and in a strongly worded open letter told him "enough is enough".

    Mr Corbyn repeated his apology to Jewish people in a letter ahead of a planned protest.

    Another 123 former Carillion workers will lose their jobs this week, the official receiver has reported.

    The Wolverhampton-based firm went into liquidation in January.

    It means 1,705 people have now lost their jobs in the wake of the firm's collapse.

    However 481 workers have been given good news this week that their jobs have been saved.

    To date 9,073 workers have been found new roles.

    The car fire at the Gallagher Retail Park in Coventry is now out.

    West Midlands Fire Service says, although the fire's out, a lane on Stoney Stanton Road will be shut, external "for some time", adding that there are no reports of anyone being hurt.

    A car on fire is being dealt with by fire crews at the Gallagher Retail Park in Coventry.

    The fire service said heavy smoke was causing problems across the A444 and traffic island on Stoney Stanton Road.

    There are no reports of any injuries.

    Worcester Warriors' director of rugby Alan Solomons says his side paid the price for a poor start in their 58-25 defeat at Sale Sharks.

    Warriors shipped eight tries in what was their heaviest defeat of the season.

    Sale opened up a 29-6 interval lead and, despite three second-half tries, Worcester couldn't get back into the contest.

    It leaves them now only 10 points clear of bottom club London Irish.
