  18. Maternity closures caused by midwife shortagepublished at 18:56 Greenwich Mean Time 13 March 2018

The head of midwifery at the Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital Trust says the recent suspension of services at Shropshire's rural maternity units are down to a lack of midwives.

Sarah Jamieson says that's despite a recent successful recruitment campaign.

    Maternity ward

There have been closures affecting maternity units in Bridgnorth, Ludlow and Oswestry over the past year.

The hospital trust has previously blamed "staff sickness", but recently said it was having to concentrate staff in Shrewsbury and Telford instead, because mothers were preferring to give birth in the larger maternity centres.

    Quote Message

Quite simply we need more midwives to run the current model and we started to talk about this last year. And before we had the temporary suspensions we talked about not having enough midwives to staff the MLUs as buildings. So in other words, if we're not having enough activity there, we don't have enough midwives to have them simply staffing a building
