    A new date has been set for the Shrewsbury 10K run which was due to happen last weekend.

    It was among a number of races to called off because of the weather.

    It will now be held on Sunday 22 July and organisers say runners don't need to re-register, but there will be no refunds issued or deferrals to next year's event.

  2. Child sexual abuse prosecutions rise by 50%published at 11:40 Greenwich Mean Time 21 March 2018

    There were 166 convictions for offences connected with child sexual abuse in the West Mercia force area last year, the government has said.

    Telford has been in the spotlight since the Sunday Mirror published a report about "groups of mainly Asian men" targeting vulnerable white teenagers in the town since the 1980s, external.

    Responding to a question from the local MP Lucy Allan, the Attorney General's office said in all there were 206 prosecutions in West Mercia for offences flagged as child sexual abuse in 2016-17 - that's a rise of almost 50% since 2010.

    In 2012-13 there were just 87 convictions in the area, although previous years saw slightly higher figures.

    Across England as a whole, there were 5,007 convictions for similar offences in 2016-17.

  3. Air pollution 'very high' at train stationpublished at 11:28 Greenwich Mean Time 21 March 2018

    Air pollution at Birmingham's New Street Station exceeds "very high" levels on nearly a daily basis, it has been revealed.

    A study carried out by the University of Birmingham showed that the concentration of lung-damaging Nitrogen oxides, in particular Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2) was often above recommended levels.

    Network Rail has vowed to tackle the issue and declared it had already implemented changes which had resulted in improvements.

    University expert John Thornes said: "These levels are very high, as high as anywhere in the country I would imagine."

    The study took samples from all 12 platforms with platform two showing the highest levels of pollution due to the high number of diesel trains which it serves.

    Trains sitting "idle" at the platforms with their engines left on are one of the main reasons for spikes in pollution.

    Network Rail has outlined a number of measures to improve air quality, including working with the four main operators; Virgin, Cross Country, Arriva and WM trains, to ensure their train engines are turned off when possible.

    Two men have been arrested in connection with the alleged exploitation of workers.

    The Gangmasters and Labour Abuse Authority, external (GLAA) said warrants were executed at two homes in Birmingham and Wolverhampton early this morning.

    The two men, both aged 41 and Romanian nationals, are being held on suspicion of acting as an unlicensed gangmaster contrary to section 12 of the Gangmasters Licensing Act.

    The GLAA acted following concerns from a West Midlands recruitment agency that workers were being controlled and exploited.

    The two men are being held at a police station where they will be questioned later today.

  5. Coventry Toys R Us distribution centre to closepublished at 11:09 Greenwich Mean Time 21 March 2018

    A Toys R Us distribution centre in Coventry is to close, meaning 98 people will be made redundant.

    Last week, Toys R Us announced all of its stores would close over the next six weeks following the chain's collapse into administration.

    Simon Thomas, Joint Administrator and Partner at Moorfields, said: "After it became clear that we would not be able to secure a buyer for the business, one of the major initial tasks was to transfer all of the remaining stock to the stores.

    "With this now complete, we have been required to wind down operations at the Distribution Centre."

    An elderly woman has died in a house fire on Conway Road, Chelmsley Wood.

    West Midland Police said officers were called by the fire service just before 02:30 this morning.

    A new medical school could soon be training a whole new generation of doctors and nurses.

    The University of Worcester's Board of Governors has unanimously approved an application to the British Medical Council with an emphasis on training medical students from rural communities.

    Football clubs in the West Midlands in the premier League and Football league are set to see the cost of matchday policing rise.

    Bank holiday games will see the biggest increase - about £180,000, due to undercharging in the past, West Midlands Police says.

    A recent court ruling means the force can no longer charge for policing streets away from the stadium, which may cost £110,000 a year.

    A woman from Cheadle is due in court today charged with murdering her mother.

    Charlene Sargeant, 24, from Sun Street, is accused of stabbing 53-year-old Rocky Sargeant to death.

    Her body was found at a house in Sun Street last Friday.

    In recent weeks, turnaround firm Melrose has been pursuing a hostile takeover bid for Redditch-based engineering giant GKN, one of the UK's largest industrial firms.

    Melrose specialises in buying up industrial companies it believes are undervalued and restructuring them before selling them on, while GKN makes parts for some of the world's largest planemakers and carmakers.

    MPs and the pensions watchdog have called for the deal to be blocked, so Melrose has been trying to allay concerns with repeated offers - including a pledge to boost GKN's pension fund by £1bn.

    A dog weighing nearly 11 stone (69kg) is hoping to find a new home - the problem is his new owners will need a bit of space.

    A former leisure centre in Worcester is to be turned into flats for vulnerable and homeless young people under plans approved by the city council.

    Last night, councillors rubber-stamped the sale of the Sansome Walk Leisure Centre site with the aim of turning it into flats, apartments and offices for 18-35-year-olds, run by youth charity the YMCA.

    A planning application would have to be submitted, but it's understood the proposed flats could accommodate up to 80 people.

    Worcester City Council says the development will address the need for housing and support for young people.
