    Kathryn Stanczyszyn
    Political Reporter, BBC WM

Things are a bit different this year for Birmingham – the country’s biggest local authority.

It is having an all-out election after the Kerslake review found the council wasn’t operating efficiently and recommended scaling the number of councillors down from 120 to 101.

    Ballot box

So ALL seats are being contested and the Birmingham wards , externalhave changed – there’ll actually be more, 69 now up from 40. But they are smaller (fewer residents to each one) and will be represented by either one or two councillors.

That means it’s all up for grabs at this election, and has caused a bit of soul-searching over whether traditional voting patterns within the city might be affected.

Add to that the possible effect of last year’s bin strike and some internal turmoil within Labour when it comes to new candidates from the Momentum side of the party and some Conservatives say they’re confident of gains.

But with strong individual records in certain areas and a very healthy existing majority, Labour says it’s optimistic the city will remain under its control.
