  2. Delay to hospital's opening 'can't go beyond 2020'published at 18:09 British Summer Time 20 April 2018

    The man in charge of building the delayed, £350m Midlands Metropolitan hospital in Smethwick says it must open within two years.

    Work on the site was halted when key contractor Carillion collapsed in January.

    The hospital was due to open in October 2018, but no interim contractor has been secured and the trust board fears costs could rise.

    Earlier in the week, Prime Minister Theresa May said the contract to build the hospital was still in force and the Department of Health, as well as the Cabinet Office, were "working to resolve it".

    Four men have been released on bail , externalfollowing their arrest after trouble broke out near a pub.

    Police were called to the Horse and Jockey, New Street, Ross on Wye, on Wednesday evening following reports of disorder outside.

    One man needed treatment in hospital.

    Officers arrested the four, aged 19 to 25 and all from Herefordshire, on suspicion of affray.

    West Midlands Police says officers were called to reports of a one-year-old going into cardiac arrest on Ellacombe Road this afternoon.

    They say paramedics couldn't save the child's life.

    A lithium battery for a golf trolley had overheated while being left on charge, the fire service says, at Kingfisher, Wilnecote, Tamworth yesterday.

    The people inside the house thankfully got out safely.

    Two drivers are being urged to come forward by police investigating a fatal crash following a police pursuit.

    The Toyota Aygo was being pursued by police as it travelled the wrong way on the A50 near Longton in Staffordshire on Sunday.

    A 19-year-old man died in a crash, while an 18-year-old woman remains in hospital.

    Today, police say they're keen to speak to the drivers of a red Skoda estate and a burgundy 4x4, seen heading eastbound on the A50 just before 06:00 that morning.

    A man has been jailed for eight months after narrowly missing hitting a woman and child during a police chase in Rugby, Warwickshire.

    Eamon McCarthy, 23 of Oaks Driver, Featherstone, Wolverhampton admitted dangerous driving at an earlier hearing at Warwick Crown Court.

    The chase, along the A426 towards the M6 in March 2017, saw him collide with a police car and injure an officer.

    Det Sgt Ollie Deakin from Warwickshire Police said McCarthy had "put his own life at risk and the lives of other road users and pedestrians".

    He was also banned for 32 months.

    Police investigating the death of a woman in West Thurrock this morning have arrested a 31-year-old man from Birmingham on suspicion of murder.

    A woman was found with serious injuries close to the A1306 Arterial Road and died a short time later.

    The road has been closed for an investigation and unlikely to re-open for some time.

    Blackburn Rovers beat Peterborough 3-1 and the result stretched their lead over third-placed Shrewsbury to eight points.

    Town host Bury this weekend with three more games left to play in the league this season, giving a maximum of 12 points available to them.

    Shropshire Archives says the 3.5kg iron meteorite was found "still warm" and buried 18 inches (45cm) deep.

    It's now at the Natural History Museum in London.
