    He'd been diagnosed with macular degeneration, which causes people to lose central vision.

    After the official confirmation, Councillor James said it was an honour and she was looking forward to carrying on the job that her group had already started.

    The mother of murdered soldier Lee Rigby says she will be kept busy at a retreat set up in his name on the fifth anniversary of his death.

    Fusilier Rigby, from Middleton, Rochdale, was killed by Michael Adebolajo and Michael Adebowale outside Woolwich barracks in London on 22 May 2013.

    His parents set up the Lee Rigby Foundation to help veterans and their families recover from loss or trauma and will spend the day working at Lee Rigby Lodge in Oakamoor, Staffordshire.

    West Bromwich Albion are refusing to comment on reports that Darren Moore is to take permanent charge at The Hawthorns.

    Moore won three of his six matches as caretaker, losing only once, after succeeding Alan Pardew in April.

    But he couldn't prevent relegation from the Premier League.

    The Daily Mail , externalsays Moore has beaten off competition from the former Walsall boss Dean Smith, now at Brentford, in the race to succeed Pardew.

  5. RAF walk to mark Dambusters anniversarypublished at 18:41 British Summer Time 17 May 2018

    A commemorative walk has been held at RAF Cosford in Shropshire to mark the 75th anniversary of the Dambuster raids.

    It was made up of 19 teams of seven walkers, each one representing one of the seven-man 19 Lancaster bombers which took part in the raid.

    The walkers set off at 21:28 yesterday and finished at 06:15 this morning, to represent the times when the first Lancaster took off and the last one landed at RAF Scampton in 1943.

    The event has raised around £40,000 for charity and involved military personnel and civilians.

  6. Work starts on England's first safe-standing areapublished at 18:38 British Summer Time 17 May 2018

    Workers have started to install a safe-standing area at Shrewsbury Town's stadium.

    The regular plastic seats are being replaced with more than 500 rail seats, which can fold up to allow fans to stand.

    It will make Shrewsbury the first football team in England and Wales to have a safe-standing area.

    Bristol City installed a small safe standing area at its Ashton Gate stadium in 2014, but they have only been used for rugby matches.

  7. Warwickshire lose opening one day matchpublished at 18:27 British Summer Time 17 May 2018

    Warwickshire have been beaten by 57 runs in their One Day Cup match against Derbyshire at Edgbaston.

    The visitors set them a target of 360 to win the game, and Sam Hain was the only batsman to make a big score, with 108 off 101 balls.

    They were eventually bowled out for 300 with Keith Barker the next highest scorer - he was 48 not out at the end.

    Warwickshire now travel to play Yorkshire in the same competition on Sunday.

    Coventry City manager Mark Robins says mistakes are creeping into training, because the players are thinking about the possibility of a trip to Wembley.

    They need to beat Notts County tomorrow night to reach the League Two play-off final, after the two sides drew 1-1 at the Ricoh Arena.

    Robins said defender Tom Davies has no-one to blame but himself, after being banned for stamping on Notts County's Richard Duffy in the first leg.

    He'll miss tomorrow's game and the trip to Wembley, if they get there.

  10. First steps towards child sex exploitation inquirypublished at 18:06 British Summer Time 17 May 2018

    The first steps towards holding an inquiry into child sex exploitation in Telford will be taken next week, but Telford and Wrekin Council says it shouldn't be rushed.

    A group of six councillors are due to meet on Tuesday 22 May to set out what the aims of the inquiry should be, who should run it and how it can be kept independent.

    The authority agreed in April to set aside an initial £350,000 to pay for the inquiry, after the issue was highlighted again in the Sunday Mirror.

  12. Fake speed camera removed after Facebook abusepublished at 17:58 British Summer Time 17 May 2018

    A Worcestershire man, has decided to remove the fake speed camera he set up in his driveway, because of the negative comments he was getting on Facebook.

    James Dyke from Clows Top says some people threatened to tear it down or even burn his house down.

    Mr Dyke says he set it up to get motorists to think about their speed as they pass through the village and insists he has done nothing illegal, because it is on his land.

    He said he had set it up for "the good of the community".

    Friends and family of the BBC broadcaster Ed Doolan have remembered him at a memorial service in Birmingham this afternoon.

    Among the guests at St Phillip's Cathedral were the Archbishop of York, John Sentamu, the comedian Jim Davidson and Midlands Today presenter Nick Owen.

    Hundreds of members of the public also turned, external out to pay their respects to Mr Doolan, who died in January.

    All lanes have reopened on the M6 northbound in Cheshire after the earlier four-lorry crash.

    It had happened between J18 and J19 and one driver had to be cut free and airlifted to hospital.

    Police say the 16-year-old was found hurt in Lower Parade, Sutton Coldfield at around 15:30 today.

    They say he died at the scene and they've cordoned off the area.

    The England manager Gareth Southgate says the former Shrewsbury Town goalie Joe Hart still has an international future, despite not being selected for England's World Cup squad.

    Southgate decided to choose Jordan Pickford, Jack Butland and Nick Pope instead and preferred Burnley's Tom Heaton as their backup, if one of those gets injured.

  18. Man arrested after attacker tried to remove woman's hijabpublished at 17:15 British Summer Time 17 May 2018

    A man's been arrested on suspicion of hate crime offences , externalafter a woman was head-butted in an assault that also saw an attacker try to forcibly remove her hijab.

    Last month, police say five female students were at Newcastle-under-Lyme bus station when they saw a man urinating in the street.

    They say he then approached them, spat at them, made racially abusive comments and then attacked one of them.

    Today, officers say a 26-year-old man from Stoke-on-Trent was arrested on suspicion of racially aggravated assault.
