    People in Shropshire affected by flooding yesterday are being warned there could still be some sharp, thundery showers today.

    Several roads, including the A49 and the A489, flooded within an hour or two yesterday evening.

    West Mercia Police said it had a high number of calls while the county's fire service urged homeowners affected by flash floods to get sandbags from the local council.

    Three out of five parents who went back to work after their baby died said no-one talked to them about their loss, a stillbirth charity says.

    One father from Warwickshire, who lost his two-day-old daughter, says deaths should be acknowledged and not ignored.

    A survey of more than 2,500 bereaved parents also found that most employers did not offer any support.

    Sands, the stillbirth and neonatal death charity, is calling on colleagues and employers to find the words to talk about the loss of a baby.

    Dan Wood from Warwickshire, returned to work in a large team after Layla, his first baby with wife Amanda, died in December 2014.

    Recognising how uncomfortable some people might be talking to them about what happened, the couple wrote down their experience on paper and handed it out to colleagues and friends.

    A trade union says the health of children in Birmingham would be under threat if some 100 school nurse jobs are cut.

    Unite claims the city council is considering shutting the service to help it make almost £2m worth of cuts.

    It says school nurses are the only health professionals some children see.

    The council say savings do need to be found and the proposal is to make the school nursing service more targeted in the areas of greatest need in the city in future.

  5. Homes flooded and lightning starts firepublished at 07:26

    The heavy rain last night caused several homes to be flooded, lightning strikes on buildings and, in one case, a car stuck in flood water.

    A yellow weather warning for rain covered most of the West Midlands yesterday and, today, the Met Office has one in place from 09:00 to 22:00.

    Last night, Hereford and Worcester Fire Service says crews had to pump water from houses in Little Hereford, external and lightning started a small fire at a house in Colwall, although it was out when they arrived., external

    In Shropshire, fire crews were called to reports of car stuck in flood water on the A49 at Onibury although they say the driver was out when they got there., external

    Water ran off fields to submerge country lanes near Ludlow Racecourse.

    "This was my husband trying to get home from work. Water was pouring in from the fields and quite scary," said Emma Bufton, who filmed the footage below.

    A man was asked to leave a Tesco Express for wearing a flat cap.

    Graham Cattermole was told by a security guard to remove it in a "no hoodies or crash helmets policy" at the store in Upper Gornal, West Midlands,as the Dudley News reported., external

    The 64-year-old - who had just set foot through the door - refused and left without buying his weekly shopping with wife Christine, 61, on Tuesday.

    This Blackadder-themed float has won top-prize for Uttoxeter Young Farmers in the float competition at the Staffordshire County Show.

    They beat Stone Young Farmers, who went with this Porridge-theme.

    All the entrants were asked to base their designs around popular British sitcoms.

    The judges said the winning float "had plenty of characters dressed in full wartime costume and superb detailed scenery to match".

    Third prize went to a Dad's Army themed float.

    Shrewsbury Town have offered new deals to four of their squad who narrowly missed out on promotion.

    Talks will now take place with Abu Ogogo (pictured below), Craig MacGillivray, Junior Brown and Lenell John-Lewis.

    The club says Alex Rodman and Arthur Gnahoua will also be offered extensions, but it has released defender Joe Riley, goalkeeper Shaun Rowley and forward A-Jay Leitch-Smith.

    Carlton Morris, Ben Godfrey and Dean Henderson are among the loan players who have all returned to their parent clubs.

  17. Complaints over Alton Towers ride stoppagespublished at 18:41 British Summer Time 31 May 2018

    Visitors to Alton Towers today have been complaining about hold-ups on three rollercoasters, which the theme park has blamed on "routine stoppages".

    A number of people on the Oblivion ride were stuck on it for around 30 minutes before it restarted, the park said.

    Alton Towers said these stoppages can take place for a number of reasons, including passenger sickness, dropped mobile phones, or as in the case of the Wicker Man ride today, the need to add an extra carriage.

    It denied any of the rides had broken down and said the emergency services weren't called.

  19. Play aims to tell 'chocolate soldier' story from WW1published at 18:18 British Summer Time 31 May 2018

    A World War One soldier will be remembered in a special play, which premieres in Leek tonight.

    Edwin Hassall, who was born in the town, was nicknamed "the chocolate soldier" after he found a chocolate wrapper in the trenches during the Battle of the Somme.

    On it was the name and address of six-year-old Joan Burbidge, which she had insisted her father add to the parcel he was sending to the front.

    Mr Hassall wrote to her and so began a correspondence with the family which lasted through the war and beyond until his death in 1923.

  20. Unseen Windrush images set for public displaypublished at 18:10 British Summer Time 31 May 2018

    Previously unseen images from Caribbean churches in Wolverhampton will go on show as part of an exhibition to mark 70 years since the Windrush generation, external started to arrive in Britain.

    On 21 June 1948, the British troopship HMT Empire Windrush anchored in Essex carrying hundreds of passengers from the Caribbean hoping for a new life in Britain.

    Wolverhampton City Council says the art gallery on Lichfield Street will be hosting Windrush 70 from 9 June to 29 July to mark the anniversary.

    As well as the unseen photos, there'll be paintings from a Jamaican artist based in the area and pictures showing Caribbean workers in Black Country industries in the 1970s.
