  1. Blanket fort world record bid for homeless charitypublished at 18:15 British Summer Time 20 June 2018

    An attempt is being made at the University of Warwick to break the world record for the largest blanket fort - a structure draped in blankets

    It's taking place at the university's Oculus Field and the people taking part have got to build one that's larger than 306 square metres.

    The record is currently held by a school in London, set in 2015.

    Today's record attempt is in aid of the LWS night shelter for the homeless in Leamington.

  2. Consultation on college site closurespublished at 18:11 British Summer Time 20 June 2018

    North Shropshire College has begun to consult about the proposed closure of its satellite centres at Shipley, Tenbury Wells and Wem.

    The college says it's to focus investment at its two main campuses, at Oswestry and Walford (pictured below) and improve its financial position by closing uneconomic centres.

    The college says it's also working with students at the satellite centres to make sure they can continue their studies.

    Students at Shipley have begun a petition against the move, saying they are worried about the future of the animals at the site.

  3. Wasps get tough cup drawpublished at 18:00 British Summer Time 20 June 2018

    Wasps have been paired with three other former European champions, Toulouse, Bath and defending champions Leinster, in the pool stages of next season's Heineken Cup.

    "It’s a very difficult draw," said head coach Dai Young. "But that’s what you expect when you’re playing against the best 19 other teams in Europe.

    “Toulouse, Dublin and Bath are also all really nice places for our supporters to go, so I’m sure they’ll enjoy the draw. They are big clubs with great history and tradition and big followings, so they will be great occasions, for sure.”

    Toulouse, the very first European champions in 1996, have now won it four times, as have Leinster. Bath won in 1999, while Coventry-based Wasps won it in 2004 and 2007 when they were still a London side playing their home games in High Wycombe.

    Their best effort in the competition since moving to Coventry was reaching the quarter-finals in 2016.

    Firefighters in Cheshire had to tackle a vehicle fire this afternoon which then spread to the road's grass embankment. , external

  6. Tribute to motorcyclist after fatal crashpublished at 17:44 British Summer Time 20 June 2018

    The family of a 54-year-old motorcyclist, who died following a crash in Coventry on 13 June, say he was "a wonderful man who always rushed to help anyone who needed him".

    In a statement, they said Mark Jackson would be "greatly missed by our entire community" and that they were "devastated" by the loss.

    West Midlands Police arrested a 28-year-old man on suspicion on causing death by dangerous driving after the collision and he has since been released on police bail.

    The draw has taken place for rugby union's European Challenge Cup and Worcester Warriors will face two trips to France.

    They have been drawn in a group with Pau, Ospreys and Stade Francais.

    West Mercia Police has been told to improve its work on serious and organised crime, as well as its overall performance.

    The criticisms come in a report, by Her Majesties Inspectorate of Constabulary and Fire and Rescue Services.

    It also said the force should set up better intelligence-sharing with other forces and agencies.

    The force’s Police and Crime Commissioner John Campion told councillors on the West Mercia Police and Crime Panel that the report into the force’s effectiveness was "disappointing".

  10. Club looking for volunteers for clean uppublished at 17:21 British Summer Time 20 June 2018

    AFC Telford United is looking for volunteers to help with painting and ground maintenance at the Bucks Head stadium.

    The club says all tools will be provided and the first session is Monday 25 June, between 10:00 and 15:00.

    Police investigating a stabbing in Dudley have named a suspect they're keen to track down and question in connection with the attack.

    A 33-year-old man is still recovering after suffering serious stab wounds in an attack on 8 May in Hall Street, Sedgley.

  12. Police officer faces rape trialpublished at 16:54 British Summer Time 20 June 2018

    A West Mercia Police officer has gone on trial at Worcester Crown Court, charged with two counts of raping a woman.

    Gary Jones, 45, was initially suspended from his role as a PC on 9 August 2017, but returned in a non-operational role in Worcester on 15 February this year, where he remained until the trial.

    He denies the charges and the trial is expected to finish next week.

    Victims of child sexual exploitation in Telford will get to have their say on who should run the inquiry into historic cases in the town.

    An advisory group is due to meet this evening to discuss how the framework for the council-commissioned inquiry - four victims have been invited to join that panel.

    In April, the Labour-run council agreed to commission its own independent inquiry and it has set aside £350,000 to pay for it, after claims about the scale of child sex exploitation in the town were made in the Sunday Mirror.

    A taxi driver lost his licence after he licked a woman's face, it's emerged.

    The details are in a report , externalthat went before Birmingham City Council’s licensing and public protection committee today.

    It says police were told that the private hire operator, who's not been identified, had at first grabbed a female passenger's scarf before trying to "stick his tongue down her throat".

    The woman managed to pull away and still offered to pay the fare before he tried again to kiss her, but instead licked her face.

    The council was told by police on 19 April and, later that day, licensing officials went to the driver's home to tell him his licence was revoked.

  16. Carlsberg inquest hears from co-workerpublished at 16:14 British Summer Time 20 June 2018

    An inquest into the death of a Shropshire man at a Carlsberg brewery has heard from one of his co-workers, who described a thick cloud of smoke at the Northampton factory.

    David Chandler, from Bridgnorth, died on 9 November 2016 after ammonia gas leaked from an old compressor he had been moving.

    Anthony Warren told the inquest at Northampton's County Hall that the first he knew of the leak was when three men ran towards him shouting at them to get out - and he described seeing a thick cloud behind them.

    The inquest, which is set to run until 3 July, continues.

    The work done at Birmingham Children's Hospital will feature in a BBC One documentary this evening.

    In it, Dr Hilary Jones examines how the training of paediatric doctors and nurses has changed over the 70-year history of the NHS, and meets the doctors who work there.

    It's part of a series of programmes entitled How the NHS changed our world and in it Dr Jones reveals how the hospital saved the life of his own granddaughter.

    It airs at 19:00 on BBC One.

    Residents in part of Coventry are considering legal action after plans for a village-sized development on former greenbelt land were approved.

    The scheme at Westwood Heath includes 425 houses and a new shop - almost 150 objections were made when the plans were submitted.
