    A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder, external after an 86-year-old woman was stabbed to death in her Birmingham home.

    The woman was found at an address in Aubrey Road, Small Heath, yesterday where she was confirmed dead.

    The 20-year-old arrested in Stoke-on-Trent in the early hours of this morning, is currently in hospital receiving medical treatment, and will be questioned once discharged, police said.

    An 18-year-old man is in a critical but stable condition in hospital with multiple stab wounds, said West Midlands Police.

    Retailer The Works - which sells gifts, arts, crafts, toys, books and stationery - is to float on the London Stock Exchange.

    Shares in the Birmingham-based chain, external, which has 447 stores and concessions and an online business, have been priced at 160 pence each and the sale will raise £65.2m.

    The Works will retain £28.5m, with the rest going to shareholders.

    The company said it would use the money to repay debt.

    It's expected that dealing will begin on 19 July.

    The operation to rescue Thai schoolboys, trapped in a cave, was "unprecedented" and more difficult than anything that has ever been attempted before, said Coventry diver Richard Stanton.

    On his return to the UK today he said there was "chaos" surrounding the site of the rescue, but "we were so task orientated and focused that we blanked that out and carried on with the job in hand, step by step until we achieved success".

    Answering questions from reporters at Heathrow, he denied the diving team were heroes: "We're just using a very very unique skill set, which we normally use for our own interest, and sometimes we're able to use that to give something back to the community, so that's what we did."

    Asked if it was a rescue he dreamed of doing, he said "no, it's a rescue I dread doing".

    A 425-home garden village on the outskirts of Coventry has been approved, despite objections by local residents.

    The application, which needed to be confirmed by both Coventry and Warwick councils, due to its location, was passed by a vote of six to two.

    The houses are scheduled to be built in the area just off Westwood Heath Road, which was recently designated for housing as part of the council’s Local Plan, removing its green belt protection.

    The proposals are part of plans by local authorities in Coventry and Warwickshire to find space for 88,000 new homes by 2031.

    The Shropshire military base was officially opened in July 1938 and played a crucial role in the World War Two.

    In the decades since, hundreds of thousands of RAF personnel have been trained there and deployed on missions across the world.

    A Coventry firefighter who was one of the first divers to find the Thai schoolboys trapped in a cave, said he was "relieved and excited" to have discovered them.

    Richard Stanton and a team of divers, including Mike Clayton from Shropshire, have been speaking to reporters at Heathrow Airport.

    He said to find all 13 still alive was just "unbelievable".

    "As they were coming down the slope we were counting them, until we got to 13."

    "We gave them some extra light, they looked in good health, but of course when we departed all we could think about was how we were going to get them out and so there was relief tempered with uncertainty".

    A group at Wolstanton Marsh are the latest to park on council land.

    The local authority said it would be working more closely with Staffordshire Police to deal with unauthorised encampments.

    More needs to be done to help disabled passengers at Birmingham, Manchester, London Gatwick and London Stansted airports according to the Civil Aviation Authority.

    Manchester was the only airport rated "poor", but the other three have been told they "need improvement".

    Birmingham, Gatwick and Stansted had been marked down for failing to provide sufficient information about their standards of service, the CAA said.

    In its annual report on accessibility, it said all three airports were taking action to remedy these problems.

    The CAA said there were now more than three million requests for disability assistance at UK airports annually - a rise of nearly 80% since 2010.

    Det Sup Adrian McGee, who led the Major Investigation Unit across both forces for many years, passed away suddenly on 28 June.

    Warwickshire Chief Constable Martin Jelley said he had the "reputation of being both a very skilled and capable police officer but also a thoroughly decent, kind and genuine man by all who knew and worked with him".

    PC Kimberley Morris, of West Mercia Police, was only in her second week of independent patrol when she was called to the disturbance.

    She was recognised at the Police Bravery Awards held in London on Thursday.

    Other winners included a Metropolitan police officer killed during the Westminster terror attack.

    A camera disguised as an umbrella sold for £2,700, and another behind the button of a man’s jacket £1,000.

    The collection of cameras made more than £60,000 in total.

    People living in part of Staffordshire say taking the bin out has become "frightening" because works in an alleyway have left trenches covered by plastic ramps.

    Severn Trent's been replacing water pipes over the past few weeks in the area around Victoria Place in Wolstanton, Newcastle-under-Lyme.

    But residents have told BBC Radio Stoke that delays have led to the deep trenches being covered over by plastic boards which they describe as "treacherous" to walk over.

    The water firm's apologised, but says it regularly checks the site for safety and that the work is expected to be completed by early next week.

    The woman was found at an address in Aubrey Road, Small Heath, at about 11:00 on Thursday where she was confirmed dead.

    Police said an 18-year-old man was in hospital with multiple stab wounds and a second man suffered minor injuries.

    Neighbours said they were "disgusted" by the crime.
