    A union representing lorry drivers says some truckers have little choice other than to use roadsides as a toilet.

    People living near the A34 in the Trentham area of Stoke-on-Trent have complained about human waste and rubbish being left outside their homes.

    The city council has agreed to stop vehicles over seven-and-a-half tonnes from pulling up there overnight.

    But Alexander Harris, from the United Road Transport Union, said there was a general lack of facilities for drivers to use.

    "If you leave somebody without access to a toilet there's only there's one thing they're going to do," he said.

    He also blamed employers for not paying for drivers to stop at official truck stops.

    The road in which a major water main burst this weekend is expected to stay shut until at least Thursday.

    About 100 properties were affected by flooding on Wheeler Street Newtown, Birmingham, on Saturday, causing extensive damage.

    The burst pipe caused major damage to the road surface, which is closed between the junction of Well Street and Farm Street and the B4515 Clifford Street.

    Severn Trent is investigating the cause.

    The company said it experienced some "technical issues" in the area yesterday, and that, combined with high demand, resulted in some customers having no or low pressure.

    West Midlands Police says it took the "highest ever volume of 999 calls in our history" on Saturday, and blamed it on a mixture of 'sun, the World Cup and alcohol'.

    The force tweeted it took 3,276 emergency calls in just 24 hours.

    Two people continue to be questioned in Coventry after a man was stabbed to death.

    The 27-year-old was found shortly before 11:50 on Sunday on St Austell Road. He died in hospital a few hours later.

    A man, also 27, has been arrested on suspicion of murder.

    A 53-year-old woman was also arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender.

    A 20-year strategy to create a Midlands Rail Hub will create six million more train journeys each year - plus a £649m boost to the region's economy, a new report is expected to say.

    The report will be unveiled today by the transport body Midlands Connect and the Secretary of State for Transport.

    It also recommends re-opening local lines going into Birmingham Moor Street from Kings Norton along the Camp Hill line, and a new junction with the Chiltern line.

    Two lanes are now open on the M6 at the site of a multi-vehicle crash on the southbound carriageway between J6 and J5.

    Recovery work is going on at the site, said the Central Motorway Police Group, and that drivers and passengers sustained "minor injuries".

  10. Murder inquiry as its revealed man died of head injurypublished at 07:35 British Summer Time 9 July 2018

    A post mortem examination has revealed a man, found dead in a flat in Walsall, died from a "blunt force head injury".

    The 65-year-old was found in St Thomas Close, Coalpool, on Friday, but officers believe he had been dead for several days.

    Police are now treating his death as murder and are appealing for information.

    A multi-vehicle crash has closed two lanes of the M6 southbound between J5 and J6, in the West Midlands.

    There are delays of about an hour on the approach from Walsall, said the Highways Agency.

    Drivers are being advised to find an alternative route.
