    Two teenage girls had to be rescued by police after being chased up trees, external by a "large angry goat".

    West Mercia Police says it happened yesterday afternoon at Granville Country Park in Donnington, Telford.

    The force added that it was a "large goat and tried to push the girls over" so two Police Community Support Officers had to "save them".

    A council chief executive who was suspended, external after a row over voting in last year's general election has left the authority "by mutual consent".

    Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough Council says John Sellgren, who was the acting returning officer at the time of the 2017 general election, is no longer in the post after seven years. , external

    Mr Sellgren was criticised in November, along with another council official, after voters were missed off registration in the election and two voted who were not eligible to.

    Today, the council says it's made no additional payments to him and Mr Sellgren says he sends his best wishes to staff he'd worked with.

    All lanes have now reopened on the M6 , externalafter a lorry came off the the M6 southbound in Staffordshire near J13.

    Highways England says all lanes are now open at J13, near Stafford, but the exit slip road is still shut for barrier repairs.

    Traffic is delayed back to J15.

  7. Plans for city woodland walk on former Loop Linepublished at 10:12 British Summer Time 9 August 2018

    A countryside walk in the middle of Coventry could be opened up if plans to buy an abandoned railway line are successful.

    The Historic Coventry Trust is in the process of acquiring the Coventry Loop, which links the city's Charterhouse Heritage Park to Gosford Green.

    The line was a freight-only railway line which opened in 1914 to allow trains to avoid going through the busy Coventry station and instead use the goods stations at Bell Green and Gosford Green.

    It would be used to create a two-mile circular walk along the River Sherbourne, through woodland and wetland areas.

    A lorry driver's been taken to hospital after his vehicle came off the M6 in Staffordshire and hit trees on the embankment.

    The ambulance service says crews were called to J13 southbound, near Stafford, at around 02:30 and had to wait while firefighters stabilised the vehicle., external

    It says the 63-year-old man was taken to hospital with a head injury.

    Earlier we reported pollution levels at Birmingham's New Street Station were still too high, despite an alarming report from researchers in March.

    There's still time to contribute to the city's clean air zone consultation, external, which closes on 17 August.

    The city council is planning to introduce charges for the most polluting vehicles - between £6- £10 a day for some cars.

    For several years Birmingham has been named and shamed as among the worst cities in Europe for air pollution.

    The local authority believes pollution is responsible for shortening the lives of about 900 people a year.

    An ageing swimming pool has led to a council overspending on its leisure budget by tens of thousands of pounds.

    Boiler replacement and temporary closures of the pool at Alleyne’s Sports Centre, Stone, Staffordshire, has cost Stafford Borough Council £53,000, its latest figures revealed.

    At its latest meeting, the authority's cabinet heard the pool, which is part of Alleyne's Academy, was going to be shut by the end of June due to costs.

    But the council stepped in to keep it open and it says it will nurse it through the next few months until a new leisure centre opens on Westbridge Park in the town next spring.

    A West Midlands Police officer who said she was racially abused at a football match over the weekend said she was left "humiliated" and "isolated" after the incident.

    Karen Geddes said she was walking towards the Hawthorns to see West Brom's first match in the Championship, when a Bolton fan told her to go back to Africa.

    "I've had racial abuse shouted at me before" she said, "both in uniform and out of uniform," but said she felt this was worse "because I had my child with me".

    She's been with the force for 25 years, and is also the chair of the Black and Asian Police Association.

    West Midlands Police confirmed that a 22-year-old man was arrested for racial abuse and was later released on bail pending further enquiries.

  12. M6 lorry crash: Nine miles of queuing trafficpublished at 08:40 British Summer Time 9 August 2018

    There's about nine miles of queuing traffic on the M6 southbound up to J13, in Staffordshire where an operation is under way to recover a lorry that left the carriageway.

    Queues are also forming on the northbound side, opposite the scene, as people slow down to take a look.

  13. Call for manufacturers to pick up bill for dumped fridgespublished at 08:20 British Summer Time 9 August 2018

    Three thousand fridges were dumped across Birmingham last year, the city council said.

    It's calling for disposal costs to be included in the cost of appliances and as such paid for by retailers and manufacturers.

  15. European Championships: Peaty goes for fourth goldpublished at 07:58 British Summer Time 9 August 2018

    Adam Peaty is going for his fourth gold today at the European Championships in Glasgow.

    The Uttoxeter swimmer set a new championship record to retain the 50m breaststroke title and win his third gold medal on Wednesday.

    Peaty also won the 100m breaststroke and 4x100m mixed medley in Glasgow.

    The 23-year-old will take part in the mixed relay later.

  16. Homeless rehousing scheme 'inhuman'published at 07:46 British Summer Time 9 August 2018

    More than 350 families and individuals at risk of homelessness in London have been rehoused in the Midlands in the last three years - with councils in the capital taking advantage of the region's lower housing costs.

    But some rehoused families say they feel they've been forced to live here.

    Over the last five years, the London borough of Brent has rehoused 22 families in private rented and temporary accommodation in Kidderminster alone.

    Air pollution levels at Birmingham New Street station are improving - but more improvement is needed, Network Rail's admitted.

    In March, researchers from the University of Birmingham told a city council health scrutiny committee, external that the levels of nitrogen dioxide sometimes tripled the threshold for an air quality "incident".

    Those type of cases prompt government warnings for people with lung and heart problems to avoid strenuous activity and those with asthma to ensure they have their inhaler to hand.

    At the time, the station was compared by councillors to a steel foundry and it was declared the biggest pollution-related risk to public health in the city.

    Since then, Network Rail says it has worked to cut the time diesel trains sit idle at platforms and improved ventilation with fans, but admits they've still recorded high levels of nitric oxide on platforms.
