    A pilot scheme aiming to rehabilitate people convicted of animal cruelty has been launched in the Midlands.

    The programme, being run in Birmingham, is designed to educate men and women sentenced by the courts for acts of animal cruelty.

    It aims to give those who take part a better understanding of animal care and teach them how to control their emotions more effectively.

    Figures show that 6,216 complaints of animal cruelty were recorded in the West Midlands region over the last year - making it the fourth worst area in the country.

    One of Europe’s largest cranes will return to Telford next month to lift the main span of a footbridge into position.

    In June, it was used to lift a first section of the crossing into place to link the railway station with the town centre.

    The council says the second lift will take place from 12-18 September and the A442 Eastern Primary will be shut in both directions during that time., external

    Double murder suspect Janbaz Tarin is still in the West Midlands area and people may be protecting him, West Midlands Police believes.

    A reward of £5,000 has been offered by Crimestoppers for information that leads to the arrest of Mr Tarin, 21.

    Raneem Oudeh, 22, and her mother Khaola Saleem, 49, were fatally stabbed in a street in Solihull in the early hours of Monday.

    Det Ch Supt Mark Payne appealed directly to Mr Tarin to hand himself in.

    The Department for Transport has confirmed that it will announce whether the request for £54.4m has been successful “in the coming months”.

    It had been hoped a decision would be made as part of the chancellor's Spring Statement.

    The project, which would link the Holyhead Roundabout with the Battlefield Link Road, is expected to cost £71m with Shropshire Council contributing £17m.

    Police say, early on Saturday 11 August, a portable cabin was broken into and the cash taken from a black electrical box.

    Baggies forward Hal Robson-Kanu has retired from international football with immediate effect, he has announced.

    The 29-year old confirmed the news in a statement , externalshortly after the Wales squad was announced.

    Robson-Kanu retires having made 44 Wales appearances, scoring five goals, including two at the Euro 2016 finals. Most famously, he scored Wales' second goal in their stunning 3-1 win over Belgium in the semi-finals of that tournament.

    Plans to erect a blue plaque in Wolverhampton to commemorate the life of Enoch Powell have been scrapped.

    The proposal to recognise the controversial former city MP has now been halted after the Civic and Historical Society committee failed to agree.

    The former Conservative member for Wolverhampton South West gained notoriety in 1968 on the back of his famous Rivers of Blood speech, which warned of the dangers of mass immigration.

    Heating Coventry's new water park with waste steam from the Whitley incinerator will help reduce the city's carbon footprint, according to the council officer in charge.

    The site at the old Christchurch House in the city centre is being connected to the Heatline scheme - which already heats the council house and the cathedral.

    It happened late Saturday evening on the Nantwich Road, Crewe, police say, and the man told the homeowner, an elderly woman, he was carrying out a drugs raid.

    He then let three other masked men into the house and they told the victim, her husband and son to go upstairs while they searched the house, making off with cash.
