    A nurse has resigned from an emergency department at Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust, citing safety reasons.

    The chief executive says the A&E departments in the hospitals have only been kept open due to the dedication of staff covering shifts, but the current situation is unsustainable.

    A consultation, due to end next month, is looking centralising services at the trust's two hospitals - Shrewsbury is set to specialise in emergency care under the preferred option - which the trust said would help tackle staff shortages.

    Chief Executive Simon Wright said after starting to address a long-standing shortage of consultants, the hospital had also more recently faced a shortage of middle-grade doctors and nurses in A&E.

    "We need about 20 [middle-grade doctors], we've got 10," he said. Some new consultants have also yet to start at the trust.

    Despite 63 new nurses set to join the trust in September - seven in A&E - and eight others returning from maternity leave, he described the situation as "still very fragile".

  2. Appeal to trace owner of injured dumped dogpublished at 08:07 British Summer Time 29 August 2018

    RSPCA inspectors are trying to find to find the owner a dog that was dumped in Birmingham with severe bite marks to its head and face.

    Inspectors believe the female Staffordshire Bull Terrier may have been used as a bait dog in a fight.

    It was found on Longdales Road in Kings Norton last Wednesday.

    She is now being cared for at the Birmingham Animal Hospital.

    Shell casings from 11 shootings across the West Midlands have been forensically traced to just one gun.

    Three people were shot dead and at least four more were injured between 2003 and 2009, but the weapon has never been found.

    Known as Gun No.6, it is now the subject of a new documentary, being broadcast on BBC Two later in the year.

    It will explore how forensic scientists were able to link the 11 shootings back to one gun using bullet casings found at the scenes of crime.

    Saido Berahino ended his two-and-a-half-year goal drought as Stoke knocked Premier League Huddersfield Town out of the Carabao Cup in the second round.

    Berahino, 25, got his first goal for the Potters since joining for £12m in 2017, and his first at all for 913 days, as he headed in after James McClean hit the bar.

    The result gave Stoke a second straight victory in all competitions and extended Huddersfield's winless run to eight games, going back to last season.

    A teenager with dwarfism who was allegedly told he was a "safety risk" for a catering course has been offered a job by Gordon Ramsay.

    Louis Makepeace, 18, claims bosses at the Heart of Worcestershire College discriminated against him after being ruled out of the field due to his size.

    The 3ft 10ins aspiring chef said he was left "appalled" by their actions.

    The college told the BBC "at no point has Louis been told he could not attend his course", which begins next month.

    However, it confirmed "adjustments Louis requires will need to be agreed before an unconditional offer can be given".

    Ramsay blasted the college, external for a "disgusting attitude" and said he would "offer him an apprenticeship any day".

    The search for a man wanted for the murder of a mother and daughter from Solihull has entered its third day.

    Officers were called to Northdown Road in the early hours of Monday morning.

    Raneem Oudeh and her mother Khaola Saleem were discovered with serious stab wounds and were confirmed dead at the scene.

    Ms Oudeh, who had a two-year-old son, was on the phone to police when she was attacked, West Midlands Police said.

    Officers are appealing for the public's help to find Janbaz Tarin, 21, and are asking them to call 999 if they know where he is.

    Wolves have reached the third round of the Carabao Cup for the fourth successive season with victory at Sheffield Wednesday.

    Leo Bonatini scored the opener, firing home Adama Traore's cross from 12 yards for his first goal since December.

    Helder Costa sealed Wolves' win from the penalty spot after he had been brought down by Morgan Fox.

    While Aston Villa exited the competition at the hands of Burton Albion, Walsall lost on penalties to Macclesfield Town after the tie finished 3-3 and West Brom beat Mansfield Town 2-1 to reach the next stage.

    The search is on for a much-loved family pet that has gone missing in Stoke-on-Trent.

    Longton Police have tweeted, external a photo of a missing Batty - described as a "long serving family member" who is "sorely missed".

    The Feathers Hotel in Ludlow has closed, with the loss of 16 jobs.

    The hotel voluntarily closed after the death of 69-year-old Elaine Brown from Legionnaires' disease following a stay in the hotel.

    It reopened later, but was put on the market in January and, in May, was again found to have legionella bacteria, with parts of the hotel closed.

    The hotel went into administration earlier this month and closed its doors on 20 August.

    Joint administrators Raj Mittal and Steve Stokes, partners at specialist business advisory firm FRP Advisory LLP, are seeking a buyer for the hotel and have instructed Lambert Smith Hampton and Christie & Co to market the property.

    A Shropshire Council spokesperson added its investigations under the Health and Safety at Work Act are still ongoing.

    A 15-year-old boy remains in a critical condition in hospital, external following an assault in an Oswestry churchyard on Friday afternoon.

    Police were called to the grounds of St Oswald's in the town centre at about 15:00.

    A 17-year-old boy, arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, has been released on bail.
