    A transit site for travellers could be built in Coventry to deter unauthorised encampments, a council report shows.

    For the model, the local authority is looking at a similar scheme launched by Sandwell Metropolitan Borough Council last year, a meeting heard. , external

    The matter is yet to be discussed by cabinet.

    A previous report in July showed unauthorised encampments had cost Coventry City Council £241,895 in site protection, clean-up costs and legal fees over the last three years.

    A man and a seven-year-old boy were hurt when they were hit by a vehicle which failed to stop, police say.

    The crash happened on Fletchamstead Highway, Coventry, at about 16:40 on Monday.

    The road was closed for a time.

    Officers are trying to identify a van which is believed to have been involved.

    It's thought neither of the hurt pair suffered serious injury.

    Plans for a £26m driverless car test track on part of the site where King Richard III was killed have been recommended for approval.

    Nuneaton company Horiba Mira wants to build an "autonomous vehicle testing track" on 34 hectares (84 acres) of land next to its testing centre in Leicestershire, creating up to 1,000 jobs, it says.

    However, Historic England told Hinckley and Bosworth Council it could cause harm to the significance of the Bosworth Battlefield.

    Councillors have been advised to pass the plan on the second time of asking.

    Stratford upon Avon's new hospital is being officially opened today.

    The Princess Royal will be there to mark the occasion, unveiling a plaque in its atrium.

    The hospital cost £22m to build, and includes state-of-the-art cancer and eye services.

    A "feisty" scorpion has been captured at a luxury hotel in Birmingham.

    Staff at the Hyatt Regency, soon to host part of this year's Conservative Party conference, found the unwanted guest residing on the third floor.

    They managed to trap it under a glass when it was found on 13 September and then called the RSPCA.

    Animal collection officer Vic Hurr said the mildly venomous European yellow-tailed scorpion had escaped from luggage.

    "The scorpion was only small but he was a feisty little thing," she said.

    The restoration of the roof on a Grade I-listed mill has been completed, Historic England says.

    Built in 1797, Shrewsbury Flaxmill Maltings is thought to be the first iron-framed building and is considered a forerunner to the skyscraper.

    Historic England bought the derelict site in 2005. A major renovation is expected to be completed in 2021.

    Chief executive Duncan Wilson said it was a "significant milestone" in bringing the building back into use.

  9. Man charged after police officer hit by carpublished at 08:03 British Summer Time 25 September 2018

    A man is due in court later charged with wounding after a police officer was hit by a car in Stafford.

    Gurajdeep Malhi, from the Sandon Road area of the town, is accused of wounding PC Claire Bond with intent to do grievous bodily harm.

    The Staffordshire force said Sunday morning's crash left her with extensive leg injuries, including multiple fractures and a broken kneecap.

    A second officer, also struck by the vehicle in the Coton Fields area, has been discharged from hospital.

    Mr Malhi is also charged with driving dangerously, driving while disqualified, failing to stop and driving without insurance.

    A woman arrested in connection has been charged with dangerous driving, failing to provide a specimen for breath analysis and failing to stop.

    Police said the injured officers were responding to reports of a car crashing into a garage at the back of Corporation Street.

    A council thinks it's solving the problem of potholes after throwing millions of pounds at the issue.

    Staffordshire County Council announced earlier this year that it was spending an extra £20m across four years to tackle the road blight., external

    This week, a report by the authority says it's got the number of potholes down , externalfrom more than 10,000 in May to about 9,000 by the end of July.

    It's now aiming to reduce the numbers to a "much more manageable range of 7,000-8,000" by the end of the year.

    Signalling faults are delaying rail services in the West Midlands this morning.

    Trains are running at reduced speed between Bromsgrove and Barnt Green towards Birmingham, and also between Rugeley Trent Valley and Aston.

    Two men arrested on suspicion of murder in connection with a missing university student have been released without charge.

    University of Worcester student Thomas Jones, 18, has not been heard from since the early hours of Wednesday morning.

    Emergency teams have been searching the River Severn in the city. They are due to continue this morning.

    A 20-year-old from Worcester was arrested on Sunday, followed by a second man, also aged 20.

    Police said both faced no further action.
