    An ambitious vision to create a national park in the West Midlands has been put forward.

    It would span more than seven cities and create hundreds of miles of green space, conservation areas and new cycle routes.

    The bold proposals, drawn up by landscape architect Kathryn Moore, would make the region home to the UK’s 16th official national park.

    "It's based on the idea," she said, "that the landscape isn't just the trees and the grass, but it's to do with the cultural identity of the region."

  3. Investigation launched into death of suspected burglarpublished at 08:06 British Summer Time 1 October 2018

    The Independent office for Police Conduct (IOPC) is investigating a man's death in Coventry.

    The suspected burglar died when he fell from a roof, police said.

    Officers were called to Robin Hood Road, Willenhall, Coventry, on Saturday evening to reports of a car hitting parked vehicles.

    The driver fled from the car and climbed on to the roof of a house nearby before falling, said West Midlands Police.

    Officers arrested a 31-year-old man on suspicion of attempted burglary. He was taken to hospital and died on Sunday.

    A "mandatory referral" to the IOPC had been made, it said.

    Thousands of delegates have arrived to hear key speeches and attend fringe events, with demonstrations also being held.

    Police patrols have been stepped-up and there are road closures in place around the International Convention Centre.

    PM Theresa May will deliver her keynote speech on the final day on Wednesday.

    The victim of a suspected acid attack in Bloxwich has appealed for witnesses to come forward.

    A "corrosive" substance was thrown at Mike Glover-Johnson, as he sat in a car on High Street just before 19:00, police said.

    He posted this image of himself on Facebook from his hospital bed, in a public appeal for witnesses to come forward.

    Officers said the motive was unclear, but the attack appears to be an "isolated incident".

    Seven prisoners at Long Lartin prison are awaiting transfer after six prison officers were injured in a disturbance.

    Disorder broke out at HMP Long Lartin in Worcestershire at about 09:30 on Sunday following the search of a wing.

    Specialist "Tornado" officers were brought in to deal with the disorder, which ended at about 17:30.

    Of the staff hurt, three have head injuries, two have suspected fractured jaws and one has a broken arm, the Prison Officers' Association said.

    Seven prisoners have been placed in isolation and will now be transferred to other prisons.

  7. Candlelit vigil held for Thomas Jonespublished at 07:18 British Summer Time 1 October 2018

    A candlelit vigil has been held after a body was found in the search for missing student Thomas Jones.

    The 18-year-old went missing in the early hours of 19 September after a night out during his first week at the University of Worcester.

    On Friday, West Mercia Police said a body had been recovered from the River Severn and Mr Jones's next of kin had been informed.

    It has not been formally identified.
