Yesterday, Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust Board ruled the Princess Royal Hospital in Telford would suspend services from 20:00 to 08:00 from mid November.

It said the closure was in response to shortages in specialist staff affecting the trust's two A&E departments.

But Stoke-on-Trent Labour MPs Ruth Smeeth and Gareth Snell have both jointly said that they worry the closure could create more pressure on the emergency department at the Royal Stoke University Hospital. , external

They're urging the trust to think "long and hard" about whether they've made the correct decision as they say "this is not the right decision for Stoke-on-Trent”.

Emily Proffitt from Tittensor First School, Stoke-on-Trent, is among hundreds of heads from England and Wales due to attend a rally in central London today, to demand extra cash for schools.

They will meet in Parliament Square before delivering a letter to No 11 Downing Street, amid concerns over work conditions and overcrowded classrooms.

The government says school funds will rise to a record £43.5bn by 2020 and ministers argue a new funding formula will bring more cash to schools.

    Quote Message

Normally we have a contingency [fund] in school and most schools now are wiped out of their contingency so that means, for example, if we have anything go wrong with buildings, anything needs replacing that costs thousands of pounds, there is no money available for that and it then has to come out of resources that should be for the children."
