  7. 'Up to 1,000 streets' may have missed waste collectionspublished at 11:00 British Summer Time 10 October 2018

    Kathryn Stanczyszyn
    Political Reporter, BBC WM

Dozens of streets in Birmingham are missing out on waste collections every day, since a new rota was introduced last month, according to several refuse workers.

One refuse collector even told me up to 1,000 streets may have missed out on collections in the last fortnight - recycling collections are thought to have been particularly affected.

    Rubbish piled up last summer

The new five-day rota - involving more, but shorter shifts - came in after a deal was reached between the council and workers following the three-month strike last summer, which led to thousands of tonnes of rubbish being piled up on streets (pictured).

More recently, the city council has been spending more than £300,000 a month on agency workers.

The city council's telephone helpline for rubbish was yesterday playing out a message saying they were dealing with a high volume of missed collections.

It has yet to comment on claims about the number of missed collections, but said there might be some disruption as it moved from the old system to the new one.

Oswestry's former station building could be handed over to a local railway group, with Shropshire councillors being told it's a win-win for the authority.

Councillor Steve Charmley is presenting the item and said: "If they want to take it on, then it is something Shropshire wants to get off its asset list and so will be a positive for everyone."

The group hopes to eventually link the station with a short section of line at Llynclys.
