    Coventry City Council will today find out if its sale of a 50% share of the Ricoh Arena, to Wasps Rugby Club, is to be at the centre of a judicial review.

    Court of Appeal judges will hand down a decision today.

    Lawyers for Coventry City FC argued the rugby club should pay an extra £27m for the ground.

    The football club says it is hoping to come to a deal with Wasps to extend its tenancy at the Ricoh Arena.

    The mother of a boy with epilepsy has welcomed the home secretary's decision to allow doctors to prescribe cannabis products to patients from 1 November.

    Alfie Dingley's mother, Hannah Deacon, from Kenilworth, said: "We urge the medical world to get behind these reforms so they can help the tens of thousands of people who are in urgent need of help.

    She said the product helps control Alfie's seizures.

    "I have personally seen how my son's life has changed due to the medical cannabis he is now prescribed," she said.

    West Midlands Police tweeted that Chapman Road in the area was closed after the branch of Nationwide was targeted.

    Nobody has been arrested, officers said.

    Herefordshire Council's Labour group says it cannot support the proposals for a bypass to the west of Hereford between Belmont and Holmer.

    It says it's worried that houses planned alongside the new road would add to traffic congestion and would create future demands for services and facilities.

    The group also has concerns about the council’s ability to secure government funding for the project.

    But the Conservative leader of the authority, Jonathan Lester, says the bypass has broad support across the community.

    It's being suggested that Coventry's carnival should be revived in time for the start of its City of Culture status in 2021.

    Coventry Carnival was held throughout the 60s, 70s and 80s, but after a brief revival in 2000, it was merged into the Godiva Festival (pictured below).

    The City Council has set aside a budget of £25m for a programme of events in 2021 and councillor Catherine Miks told a committee meeting this week that residents groups wanted that to include a return of the original carnival.

    An investigation into the death of a man nine days after he was arrested, after becoming unwell in the presence of police, has concluded, said the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC),

    Warwickshire Police officers were called to a property in Nuneaton in the early hours of 10 July by someone concerned about Darren Cumberbatch's behaviour.

    He was taken to hospital where he deteriorated and later died, nine days later.

    The IOPC said the conclusion of its investigation, into contact officers had with Mr Cumberbatch prior to his death, have been shared with his family, Warwickshire Police and the coroner's office "to assist with future inquest proceedings".

    "Publication of our investigation report will await the conclusion of an inquest," it said.

  20. Two cyclists trapped by falling treepublished at 17:51 British Summer Time 11 October 2018

    Two cyclists have been injured after being trapped under a fallen tree in Cheshire this morning.

    Firefighters had to free the men before they could be handed over to paramedics and taken to Crewe's Leighton Hospital.

    The men, both in their 40s, suffered an arm and leg injury in the accident on Brookhouse Lane in Smallwood.
