A former opencast mine site in Telford could be receiving 30 lorry-loads of soil a day, as part of efforts to stabilise the ground there.

A report drawn up by Telford and Wrekin Council says ground investigations in the Old Park area found trenches up to 30 metres deep, which will need more soil placing on top.

The report said the effects of the infilling would need careful monitoring.

It also said the lorries could be timed to avoid busy parts of the day.

NHS bosses have said they are still planning to demolish a derelict former hospital, despite admitting it would cost more to clear the site than it could currently be sold for.

The University Hospitals of North Midlands NHS Trust moved clinical services from the North Staffordshire Royal Infimary in 2012, into the Royal Stoke University Hospital.

Two years later, planning permission was granted for 236 homes on the site in Hartshill, Stoke-on-Trent, but the hospital's still standing in 2018.

At a community meeting for local residents, managers at the trust said asbestos in the building and funding were two of the challenges facing them as they look to get rid of the site.

But they said a paper would be drawn up on plans for demolition, although they didn't reveal when it would be presented.

The council says the hospital trust "has a package of measures to help attract medical staff from overseas including three months' free accommodation".

We are grateful for all the help and support we’re receiving from Shaun and from all our local politicians. It’s really heartening to see what can be achieved through pooling ideas and working together because what we’d all much prefer, is to find the ED staff that would enable both A&Es to stay open 24 hours a day seven days a week.”
