    The organiser of Shrewsbury's Winter Festival says she has "cool ideas for a new venue next year", but had decided to call off this year's event because "we wouldn't have been able to get numbers that we required".

    Beth Heath from Shropshire Festivals explained they'd had crowds of up to 12,000 when the event was staged in the Quarry, but it "lost a lot of money" due to heavy snow last year.

    She said she'd taken the decision to move the festival to the smaller Frankwell car park site, because the risk of another snow-hit event in the park was "too scary financially".

    And she said she'd hoped it would attract up to 6,000 visitors, but had been advised by a safety advisory group that might not be possible, so had taken the decision to cancel in the interests of the stall holders.

    A women's charity says it is dealing with up to 140 domestic abuse victims a week and has seen a 15% year-on-year rise in people using its services.

    Black Country Women's Aid said despite this, its funding has not increased - it has a £1m budget for its domestic violence services.

    The chief executive of the charity, Sara Ward, said she was not sure how it would be funded in the next financial year.

    The charity's specialist stalking service, which launched in April, has helped 300 people so far, exceeding expected numbers.

    In 2017-18, the charity supported 7,008 victims of domestic abuse in the community and 103 women with 299 children in refuge.

    During the same financial year, the charity received 24 phone calls an hour to its helpline, carried out 13,504 one-to-one support sessions and held 10 support groups a week.

    Hunger Games Sam Claflin (pictured) will join the Peaky Blinders cast for the show's fifth series, the BBC has confirmed.

    Claflin said he "couldn't feel more privileged to be invited to join this iconic show".

    The 32-year-old also praised screenwriter Steven Knight and described the production of the show as "consistently brilliant".

    Cillian Murphy will reprise his critically acclaimed role as mob boss Tommy Shelby in the show which is set in Birmingham in the years after World War One.

    The BBC said series five would be filled with opportunity and misfortune as the world is thrown into turmoil by the financial crash of 1929.

    A bus driver has been praised after a car drove on to level-crossing this lunchtime and got stuck in a line of traffic as the red lights started to flash.

    Ian Greenfield directed other vehicles to move out of the way so the blocked car on Harlescott crossing in Shrewsbury could then be driven off before a train came through.

    The head of a planning committee which turned down an application for a new KFC has accused his fellow councillors of snobbery.

    Worcester City Council rejected the fast food chain's plans for a building on The Cross by six votes to four, while unanimously approving an application to open a bar and restaurant, just down the road on Foregate.

    Councillor Chris Mitchell said: "All I see is a massive lack of inconsistency" and added it "smacked of classism".

    A report drawn up by council officers had recommended the KFC application for refusal, on the grounds it would not help create a vibrant city centre and over fears it could lead to an increase in crime and anti-social behaviour.

    A a man has been found guilty of murdering his grandmother at her home in Walsall, by a jury at Birmingham Crown Court.

    Gregory Irvin, who is 26 and from Walsall Wood stabbed 74-year-old Anne James to death on 28 February.

    A woman who was hurt when a suspected stolen car crashed into her vehicle is in a serious condition in hospital, police say.

    This afternoon, Staffordshire Police clarified that officers had called off the pursuit, external "for safety reasons" shortly before the crash.

    Three children who were in the woman's car suffered minor injuries.

    Police say a 20-year-old man from Birmingham was arrested for offences including suspicion of theft and dangerous driving - he is still in custody.

    A flagship NHS mental health service is failing patients in one in seven areas of England, research by the BBC shows.

    People with conditions like depression, anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder are entitled to psychological therapies, such as counselling.

    The NHS is meant to successfully treat half of the people it sees.

    But an analysis of official NHS data showed this was not the case in 28 of the 195 local areas of the country in the first six months of this year.

    They include NHS Dudley and NHS Vale Royal in Nantwich,Cheshire.

    NHS England said, despite the problems in some areas, hundreds of thousands of people had been helped to overcome depression and anxiety.

    The Coventry City owners have been refused permission to appeal a court judgement, in their long-running battle with the city council over the Ricoh Arena.

    Last Friday, the Court of Appeal said there didn't need to be a second judicial review of the stadium's sale by the local authority to Wasps rugby club.

    Club owners Sisu claimed the ground was under-valued and they should have a chance to bid for it, but the High Court rejected that claim, as did the Court of Appeal last week.

    Sisu wanted to take that decision to the Supreme Court, but the Court of Appeal has now denied that too.

    The club's owners can still go directly to the Supreme Court to appeal the latest refusal.

    A driver's admitted killing a woman in a crash when a suspected stolen car was being pursued by police.

    Sarah Giles, 20, was a passenger in a VW Golf that was in collision with an Audi A3 being chased by officers in Kingstanding in July.

    Branden Daniels, from Chingford Road, Kingstanding, today pleaded guilty to causing death by dangerous driving at Birmingham Crown Court.

    The 20-year-old will be sentenced next month and was warned by Judge Michael Chambers "a very significant custodial sentence is inevitable".
