It's a French-Spanish joint venture by KeolisAmey with TfW overseeing the franchise.

It's promising to replace all trains, at a cost of £800m, but admits it'll be around five years before 95% of journeys have new, higher capacity trains.

In the meantime, some busy commuter services are still running with just two carriages.

We are trying to bring in some interim rolling stock as quickly as possible so we're scouring the market, trying to find whatever we can in essence that's of a reasonable quality and has a good level of reliability, just to bring additional capacity into the market but it's very difficult at the minute."

  5. A&E fears as demand spikes before winter hitspublished at 10:05 British Summer Time 22 October 2018

The planned closure of Accident and Emergency units in Shropshire will put huge pressure on neighbouring units, the chief executive of the Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust says.

Last week, New Cross Hospital had its second busiest day ever, with 178 ambulances over a 24-hour period, despite the mild weather and no major events.

Year-on-year, hospital boss David Laughton said there had been a 10% rise in ambulance activity across the West Midlands last week, although it was too early to work out the cause.

    Ambulances

He said plans had been put in place to increase capacity in Wolverhampton to deal with winter pressures, although this would be "consumed" by the extra cases coming from Telford.

Despite that, he said: "We will cope and we will deal with whatever happens."

    Quote Message

I'm not critical of them closing, because they have got a necessity to close it, but it is not of their making, because the problem that we've got here is that we set up about five years ago major trauma centres. And if you're a young doctor, who's just finished their training, that is the place they want to go and work."
