  2. Soldier's widow wants better cleaning of war gravespublished at 08:35 Greenwich Mean Time 28 November 2018

    BBC Midlands Today

A war widow from Stoke-on-Trent is starting a campaign to get the graves of soldiers cleaned.

Debi Allbutt says she has written to the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, Prince Harry and the prime minister about the issue.

Her husband Cpl Stephen Allbutt was killed in a tank hit by "friendly fire" in Iraq in March 2003.

Mrs Allbutt told the BBC she believed too many of the graves were being left to deteriorate because of strict rules over cleaning them.

She wants them changed so community groups, schools and scout clubs are allowed to clean the graves near them.

The Commonwealth War Graves Commission says all war graves in the UK are subject to a two-year cleaning rota but, because of her concerns, they've sent a team to clean her husband’s grave.
