  1. Chemical incident 'caused by a spillage'published at 18:29 Greenwich Mean Time 27 November 2018

    The chemical incident at a Premier Foods site in Staffordshire this afternoon was caused by a "spillage which gave off a gas", the fire service said.

    The site at Knighton was evacuated of about 100 people.

    The ambulance service said eight people were treated for minor conditions at the scene and none needed hospital treatment.

    An 18-year-old man has been arrested after stop and search powers were invoked in the Wood End area of Coventry.

    Officers stopped and searched 12 people on Deedmore Road, Hillmorton Road and Lapworth Road, between 19:00 on Monday and 03:00 today.

    The area is where 16-year-old Jaydon James was fatally stabbed on Saturday night.

    Police used section 60 powers which allows officers to search anyone in a designated area without "reasonable grounds".

    The 18-year-old, from Tile Hill, was arrested on suspicion of drugs offences, possessing two cans of pepper spray, driving without insurance and a licence after a car was stopped near Milverton Road.

    He is set to appear at Coventry Magistrates' Court in December.

  4. Man and cats rescued from house firepublished at 17:39 Greenwich Mean Time 27 November 2018

    A man and his pet cats have been rescued from a house fire in the Staffordshire Moorlands this afternoon.

    Fire crews were called to the house in Ipstones just before 15:30.

    The man, who was hanging out of the bedroom window, was helped by neighbours.

    His two cats were then brought out and given resuscitation treatment by firefighters.

    A Sandwell GP practice has been told it must improve its safety procedures.

    Norvic Family Practice on Suffrage Street, Smethwick, was rebuked for its lack of progress in the critical area in a follow-up report by the Care Quality Commission (CQC).

    The centre had previously been rated as "inadequate" in January and the latest findings came after a monitoring visit in September.

    Inspectors for the CQC found the surgery had improved overall allowing it to raise its official status to ‘requiring improvement’ but in the area of safety, it said that “not all risks had been assessed and managed".

    Premier Foods says there were 100 people at its site in Knighton at the time of the chemical incident.

    All were evacuated and eight people were treated at the scene for "minor conditions".

    The fire service is still at the site, to ensure it is safe, and the chemical itself has yet to be identified.

    The company hasn't yet decided if the site will re-open tomorrow.

    The chemical incident in Staffordshire this afternoon is at the Premier Foods site in Knighton, the ambulance service confirmed.

    They were called at 13:50 and eight people were treated at the scene for "minor conditions".

    Premier Foods says all staff are safe and accounted for.

    The fire service said one person was taken to hospital but the ambulance service said all eight people treated have been discharged.

    A family of badgers living in undergrowth near the M6 have been moved to a new purpose-built home.

    The family have settled in well to their new 10-metre span sett, complete with nesting chambers, Highways England said.

    It had been specially dug to replicate their former surroundings close to the M6 in Coventry.

    The family were moved as work on the M6 upgrade is about to start near their old home.

  10. Taxi attack and 'arson' may be 'linked'published at 16:01 Greenwich Mean Time 27 November 2018

    A taxi was attacked by a group of men chasing a passenger who had jumped back into the vehicle after being dropped off.

    The man then left the taxi which was targeted with baseball bats and metal bars in Cadman Close, Bedworth, and ran towards the town centre - still being chased by the group.

    It happened at about 20:30 on Friday. Police believe a house fire in the same street later may be linked, and it's being treated as arson.

    Both incidents were described as being "extremely concerning".

    One person has been taken to hospital and seven people are being treated after an incident at a premises in Knighton.

    Firefighters were called to the 'hazardous material' scene at a building on Flashbrook Road at 13:30.

    A decontamination unit and Staffordshire Fire Service's environment unit have joined crews already at the scene.

    A 26-foot high statue made of knives which were handed in to police forces is being packed up ready for a move to Liverpool.

    The Knife Angel was made out of 100,000 weapons and has stood at the British Ironworks Centre near Oswestry since 2017.

    Its creator, Alfie Bradley, had hoped it could stand on the fourth plinth in Trafalgar Square, but the plan now is for it to stand outside Liverpool Anglican Cathedral over Christmas.

    The statue is due to be loaded onto a lorry on Thursday.
