    Historic England's research suggests historic buildings provide up to 15,500 people with employment.

    Heritage tourism generated £970m in spending by tourists who made 20.9m visits, it also claims.

    Converted historic properties have also provided almost 3,000 new homes over the past six years.

    One of Coventry's great engineers is the focus of a campaign to be the face of the new £50 note.

    Steam engine pioneers James Watt and Matthew Boulton appear on the current £50, issued in 2011, but now the Bank of England is seeking nominations from the public for figures to feature on a new note.

    Frederick Lanchester created the first all British four-wheel motor car and the first British motor boat.

    The campaign called "Get Fred on the 50" has been started by Coventry University's Lanchester Interactive Archive.

    Three men continue to be questioned on suspicion of murder after a man was fatally stabbed in Dudley.

    Officers were sent to Central Drive, Lower Gornal, on Tuesday evening to a report of a vehicle being rammed and two men being chased by a group carrying weapons.

    The force said three men, aged 32, 36 and 41, had been arrested at an address in Lower Gornal and it was appealing for anyone with information about the death to come forward.

    Owners of empty homes will have to pay more council tax from April in Stoke-on-Trent and parts of Cheshire under new rules being planned by councils.

    In November, the government changed the law, external so local authorities could increase the amount which can be charged for long-term empty houses.

    Cheshire East Council's now agreed that the owners will pay a 100% premium from April,, external meaning they'll pay twice the amount of council tax compared to other residents.

    Similar rules will be considered by Stoke-on-Trent City Council's cabinet next week but, as well as 100% extra for properties left empty for at least two years, they'd also charge 300% for homes which have been empty for 10 years or more., external

    Worcester Warriors have confirmed they have agreed a first-team contract with their young centre Ollie Lawrence.

    The highly-rated 19-year-old has impressed during eight first-team appearances and has excelled for the Cavaliers.

    Charges could be brought in for thousands of free car parking spaces in and around the centre of Birmingham as part of plans to tackle pollution.

    The city council's drawing up its detailed proposals for its clean air zone which it wants to create from January 2020, within the A4540 middle ring road.

    There are around 6,000 free parking spaces in the area at the moment but the authority is considering charging from £2.10 an hour for them in the future.

    A Worcester nightclub owner has been jailed for 21 months after being found guilty of possessing and supplying cocaine.

    Darren Pinches, who owns Bushwackers, Sin and Browns at the Quay, had been cleared of sexually assaulting a 20-year-old inside Bushwackers nightclub, as well as a seperate charge of possessing and supplying cocaine.

    But a jury at Warwickshire Justice Centre found him guilty of having cocaine at his former home in Fernhill Heath when police arrested him in January last year, as well as offering to supply the drug to a 44-year-old woman in Browns restaurant.

    A school in Bedworth will get two new classrooms and a bigger hall, after expansion plans were approved by Warwickshire county councillors.

    There were no objections from people living near Newdigate Primary School, in Anderton Road.

    More people are expected to move into the area with a recent update to the Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Plan earmarking green belt land near the school for more homes.

    Firefighters spent 14 hours dealing farmhouse fire at Brinklow in Warwickshire.

    It broke out on Fosse Way last night and five fire engines were called, leaving at 11:00 this morning.

    Warwickshire Fire and Rescue Service hasn't yet been able to say what started the fire, but its believed no-one was inside the property at the time.

  17. TV show to explore section of the River Severnpublished at 17:31 Greenwich Mean Time 5 December 2018

    The BBC TV show River Walks will be exploring a 17-mile stretch of the River Severn next week.

    In the programme presenter Shobna Gulati walks the Severn Way from Bewdley to Bridgnorth and hearing the stories of people living along the way.

    The programme, which is being broadcast on 10 December, will also feature the Severn Valley Railway.
